In the United States, we as a nation, put a lot of chemicals on our crops to keep bugs off, and to keep them fresh. Some of the pesticides we use in our country have been banned in other countries. Certain chemicals that we use have been linked to serious illnesses such as cancer and neurological disorders. Pesticides also hurt the environment and poison the soil.

Several pesticides we use regularly in the U.S. have been banned or severely restricted in other countries. Some include: Paraquat, Atrazine, and Acephate. These chemicals are used on corn, cotton, and soybeans in the United States. A significant reason why these pesticides are banned is because there is a high potential link to Parkinson's disease. Another chemical called Glyphosate, mainly used on wheat, has been found to cause many gluten sensitivities and celiac disease cases. Glyphosate harms the bacteria in our gut causing some people unable to digest wheat. While in other countries that don't use this chemical, people with gluten sensitivity found that they were able to digest wheat better than they were able to in the United States.

Not only are these chemicals bad for us, but they are also bad for our environment. The runoff from the chemicals is affecting wildlife, soil, water, ecosystems, and even global warming. The purpose of the chemicals is to only kill bugs and weeds. Since the bugs are becoming immune to the chemicals, we have had to make them stronger. They are so strong that they are killing birds, fish, mammals, and destroying ecosystems. When pesticides are produced, transported, or used they’re releasing greenhouse gasses. Greenhouse gasses play a big part in climate change.

Do you think that we should slow down the usage of pesticides in the U.S.?

Should we try to find an alternative to these harmful chemicals?

Do you think people in the U.S. would see changes in their health if we stopped using these chemicals?

  • Great topic choice and super job Charlotte!

  • I think yes we should try to find other alternitives. The pesticides is affecting so many things other than bugs. Many things would benifit from using other safer things because we would stop harming humans, animals, and even the soil and water

    • I agree, right now there is more negitves to pesticides than positvies. Finding a safer alternative would benifit the whole envierment.

  • I think that people in the U.S would see health changes because there is evidence to prove that these chemicals are causing people to suffer from diseases. If we cut these out and find a better way to kill off these bugs, the crops will become less harmful.

    • I agree. We are very harsh with the chemicals that we use in pesticides in the United States. I think that these are definetly linked to diseases and we need to find an alternate.

  • I think that pestisides affect many things other than just bugs. I think it would be a good idea to find an alternative to these chemicals because they are harmful to humans, animals, and even the plants. The enviroment and the community would benfit from a change in chemicals used on crops.

    • The envorment and the community would definetly benifit if we stopped using these harsh chemicals so much. Finding an alternative would be the best thing we could do in this situation to protect the lives of the things around us.

  • Yes, i belive people in the US would see health changes if we did stop using chemicals. It may not be noticable changes but I think if we stop using these chemicals it would have better long term effects on us.

    • The long term effects would benifit us as a country and be very positive for our health living in the U.S.

  • Slowing down the usage of pesticides in the U.S can be very helpful, as they have shown to have negative effects to the environment and people themselves. Therefore finding an alternative for pesticides would be beneficial for everyone and the environment.
