Should America Provide Free Healthcare?

The debate of free healthcare in the United States is an ongoing discussion that holds many pros and cons. Many people believe that free healthcare is the key to one of the many problems we have: Medical expenses. As a country that's always triving to be better healthcare is constantly mentioned as something we can improve on. With many European countries providing free healthcare for their citizens, why doesn't America?

A main reason for why the United States doesn't have free healthcare is because the resources and money needed to make it "free" is an astronomical amount. For example, in Canada, a lot taxes are much higher than in the U.S. This increase in taxes drastically helps provide for the so called "free" healthcare. Calling the healthcare free is kind of a sneaky lie. This is because the increase of taxes is comparable to the rates we pay in America.

There are many pros to free healthcare. For example, it is easily accessible and even people who are financially struggling can access it, this would be a major benefit to any country, considering the unemployed or homeless populations. Another pro is that free healthcare promotes visits to the hospital and routine checkups. This can then lead to early detection and prevention of potential disease and early treatment. However, there are many cons to free healthcare. For example, as I mentioned before the skyrocketing of taxes doesn't usually go well for people and is a major drawback to the free healthcare system. Another con is that resources could be majorly impacted. With everybody having an equall access to these resources, there could be an overconsumption of certain drugs which could lead to depletion of resources very quickly.

I feel that many Americans think that free healthcare is the greatest thing in the world, however I think if we were to institute this system, then reality would set in and people would be very negative towards the fact of higher taxes. This would then lead to people being opposed to the free healthcare system. So in conclusion, I think that either way if we have a free healthcare system or not, some people are going to be upset, whether it's from paying increased taxes, or not having a free system for their health insurance.

What do you think about America establishing a free healthcare system?

Would you be willing to pay the extra taxes if it meant free healthcare?

  • I don't think having a free healthcare would be a good idea, because having a free healthcare would bring in more taxes and less money we would bring in. Having this a lot of doctors would probably quit there job.

  • I would not be willing to pay the extra taxes, because it would be probably a higher tax than there needs to be. The government would probably upcharge the tax so that they could make a profit for themselves, in order to better our economy.

    • I agree with you, the tax charge on a free healthcare would be very expensive. You could also be getting taxes for healthcare and not even be needing healthcare at the time.

  • I think that it could bring some problems if America gave free healthcare. Health is very expensive and that is why there is insurance on it. We should be lucky that it is an option to have health insurance. The taxes could be a big issue because of the cost of health and the taxes would go up significantly. I would not be willing to pay that significant amount more if I was in that position.

    • I agree with you, if we didn't have health in surance there would be millions of more deaths every year, because they don't have the money to pay for the treatment that they need. Health insurance should stay away from taxes and be paid by each individual.

  • I don't think that it would be a good idea to have free healthcare, because as you said they would have to raise taxes. This would mean that we would probably pay for our healthcare through taxes. If the price that we pay is the same, it is not worth it to go through getting "free" healthcare.

    • I strongly agree with your statement because of the raising of taxes. It makes sense with what you're saying through paying health care through taxes. The jump in taxes would be significant close to the tax raise.

  • I also learned in a class this year that without all of the extra added on taxes that free healthcare could put on your paycheck, there is already a very good amount of money being taken out of your paycheck. It can be different amounts depending on your salary but it could be pretty high already.

    • I agree, their is many taxes on a pay check and if healthcare is on there to that would be a huge amount taken off of the check. Not many people like taxes on a pay check but adding a larger healthcare tax would put people over the edge.

  • I personally would not be willing to pay taxes for free healthcare because if I was ever in not a very good financial situation and I had to have another tax deducted from  my paycheck for healthcare I would not be the happiest person ever.
