Man $400,000 Bet Ripped Away From Him!

As march madness comes along there is a lot of betting that can be placed on all the different teams. Sports betting is very popular in the U.S. and many people bet on a lot of sports and activities. With March madness on the up and coming, the American Gaming Association estimates that there will be $3.1 billion in bets this year. This is a  very crazy number! Some people are crazy at betting and bet a lot of money on something crazy that you would think would never happen, until it does.

Military Veteran, Mark Aiello took a chance on betting. He just moved back to the suburbs in Chicago after finishing his time up in the navy. He said,”I really enjoyed my time in the Navy, and I'm enjoying my next chapter here.” He also said,”I was sitting here looking around at my daughter's toys and thinking, you know, all the things that I could give her,” which led to the gambling. On Sunday, March 6, he placed a bet on the Chicago Bulls vs. Indiana Pacers get set to tip-off at 7p.m. He put down $500 in four different bets that involved rebounds and assists between certain players. Six “legs” needed to go in his favor for his bet to be successful. His odds were not the best with the odds being 350 to 1.

After the game he expressed his feelings by saying,”Once the game was over, I was just, my heart was racing. I was incredibly excited." That night had to have been CRAZY for him! He won and banked a total of $389,000. During this moment he said,”I was just thinking about my daughter at that moment,” this shows how he wanted to do this for his daughter and he ended up getting the money. Then when he went back to look at his BetMGM app he thought something looked weird. Aiello’s bets had been greyed out and cancelled just minutes before tip-off. A few hours later the company voided his attempted $214,000 payout.

I believe that he should have been able to get the money and it was stupid that it just randomly canceled his bets. He should have been able to get his money if he placed the bets. Personally, if it was me I would sue the company and get my money because of the big wager.

Do you think it is unfair?

Would it be a good idea to sue?

  • Interesting topic and good summary Jackson! The issuer is you didn't reply to any student comments wehich is worth 30 points.

  • I think that this is very unfair. Trying to sue over a bet could be very unsucessful. Betting is very risky and you can't really fully trust an app. This is unfair, but he doesn't have a big enough case to sue.

  • I think that he should sue. I know that the app is supposed to give you your money back if you bet on a player to get a certain stat in a game and they don't play. This should be the same thing where he should get his money back. He should win if he decides to sue.

  • It is unfair, but he needs to be aware of the risks of doing these types of things. I don't think that he should bet that type of money in the first place. He needs to be more aware about the risks with betting and needs to make better decisions in the future.

  • Yes, I think suing is a much better idea than demanding for his money back. I think that if the guy were to sue, then he could have a larger payout then if he gets the money that he would've won. I think that lawyer fees are very much worth it especially if he were to win the case.

  • I think it's unfair that the $ 40,000 bet was cancled. The bet should have went in and its is completely stupid that it canceled on him just before the tip-off. He should have gotten his money back and he should take legal action, because you just a lot of money and the company is not going to give it back.

  • I personally think yes, it was unfair. I think that he should consider suing because it could pay out for him more than trying to get the money from the parlay. I also think however, that when betting he undertook the risks of what could happen and he still went through with the bet.

  • I think this is very unfair. He placed his bet and did everything that he was suppose to do. I feel like the company knew exactly what they were doing becuase the bet was so big. He won fair and sqaure and deserves the money he won.

  • I think it is unfair because he did everything as he should have. He won the money and a few minutes before tip out it was cancelled. I think the company should have to pay him, because this seems like a problem on their part.

  • This situation is completely unfair. Mark Aiello placed his bets, and he followed the rules of the betting process. The company should have honored the bet because it was put in legitimately. The fact that the company cancelled his bet without any clear explanation is a vilotion of trust and how you should run your business. He had every right to expect his winnings, especially with the amount he was betting.
