Living without Money?

In Mainz, a city in west-central Germany, 10 young people are living their dream. They believe in an utopia, a world without global social injustice, capitalism and environmental pollution. They try to be aware of what they really need to live and what not. Therefore they live vegan, ecologically, drug-free and as good as possible money-free together in a shared house, called “Liebermenschhaus”. Their groceries, for example, they get from saving them from being thrown away in a nearby grocery store. Everything they have is shared. They share their food, rent and even their closet. The fewest of them actually have a job because they live off donations, of all the things that others aren’t using at the moment. The founder of the community, Tobi Rosswog, travels through Germany, giving speeches and leading workshops to motivate people to think and live differently.

Tobi Rosswog is convinced that one day our society will be turned for the better. He believes that there will be no longer social injustice, that we won’t live from each other but with each other, and that everything will be shared.

Questions:

  1. Do you believe that one day the utopia that they are dreaming of will become real? And do you think that they can make a difference by changing their way of life?

  2. Could you live like that? Why or why not? What would you miss about your former life?

My answers:

  1. To be honest, I don’t think that the utopia will become real because there will always be people that don’t act like they should, even if there are only a few. Yes, I definitely think so, everyone can make a difference! Every little step brings you a little bit further to your goals and if you never start you will never succeed.

  2. I’m not sure if I could live like that because I don’t think that I have enough discipline to stand it. I would probably miss being able to buy whatever I want and not being sure how I will live the next few weeks.

  • Super job Clara!

  • I don't think the utopia is a real possibility because many people are selfish and greedy. I could not live like that because I would miss eating meat and having more freedom.

  • 1. No, because our society is built from the money and economy that we have built since we first came to America. I think that most people that do this, since they are mainly running off of donations, it doesn't teach them how to live on their own. 2. I couldn't live like that because I can't be vegan, and I need money to survive. I would definitely miss my old life after a while.

  • I don't think living in a perfect world is possible. I think that everyone can change their lifestyle in a positive way, but unfortunately, having everyone do that is never going to happen. I personally wouldn't be able to live like that. I would want to have a job, my own house, my own food, and my own clothes.

  • Although this utopia seems nice, I don't believe it will last. Utopias never last in any book you read or any time in history. I don't think that this society will change my life in any way, but they are definitely making a difference in their own life. I could not live like that. It would be hard to be so strict with money. I would miss being able to buy items that I want.

  • I dont think living in Utopian Society would ever work, there is so many different beliefs and opinions. I would defiantly not be able to live like this because I wouldnt be able to stand not being able to do whatever i wanted, you seem really restricted and I wouldnt like that.

  • In my opinion, I don't think that this "Utopian Society" will ever become a reality. I don't think a little group of people could make a big difference by only changing their lifestyle. I would not be able to live like that, because then I wouldn't be able to buy whatever I want or something like that. I would probably miss my own stuff and not having to share with everyone.

  • No, I don't think that there will could ever be a Utopian Society. People have different beliefs and it would never work. I don't think that I could live like that. I would definitely miss being able to wear and buy whatever I want.

  • I believe that if they really want to achieve it they could but they are gonna have to try super hard and a lot of drastic things will have to happen to encourage people to believe in this to even want to change.I personally could not live in a Utopian society because of the rules and some of the things they believe in I don't necessarily agree with so me personally I wouldn't be able to.

  • 1. Yes I believe that it is possible however something really traumatic has to happen for majority of people to change and live like this.

    2. Yes I could adapt the only thing that would be hard to let go of is cosmetics and hygiene products.
