Jamestown & colonization(1600's-1770's)-four major players-Spain-southwest Am., west SA, Florida, Portugal-east SA, England-East coast and N Canada, France-Central US & Canada, --colonization because of freedom religion, push/pull factors, jobs, start over again, 

Revolutionary War(1775-1783)-causes-taxation w/o representation, quartering, taking weapons, Boston massacre, Tea/Stamp Act, "Don't Tread on Me"  (Dec. of Ind. -July 4, 1776)

Constitution(1789)- sets up our government and rights, (Articles of Confederation-Art. 1-executive branch-president, vp, commander in chief of military, December 8, 1942-WW2, 60 days pres can send troops, vetoes/signs bills, appoint Supreme Courts, make executive orders-not in Constitution, make treaties, Art 2-congress- reps & senate, Rep-1 state got 1 vote, unfair to big states, Senate-2 per state, Rep based on pop of state, Art 3

Constitution: Art 2- legislative- Reps and Senate-  Rep based on pop, Senate has 2 for each state, 35 to be President, Rep-25, Senate-30, natural born US citizen and lived in US for 14 years. Power of Congress-declare war, make laws, approve treaties, sets weights and measures, impose taxes, accept states, impeach President, 2 presidents impeached-Johnson and Clinton. Art 3- Judicial branch- no age limit or requirement, interpret the laws, for life if you want,

Amendments- 1-Freedom of speech-not free speech in school if they disrupt class, religion, press, petition the government, 2-right to bear arms-, 3-prohibits quartering of troops, 4-illegal search and seizure-police cannot just enter your home and hope they find something, 5-double jeopardy, due process, grand jury, self incrimination-protects , 6-right to a trial by jury and a lawyer-can't just be jailed for any crime, lawyer has experience of laws, 8-excessive bail or fines, cruel and unusual punishment-can't be tortured, death row-firing squad, electric chair, lethal injection, 13-abolish slavery, 14-made African Americans US citizens-due process rights, 15-African American males right to vote,

August 29th-

Westward expansion(1800's)-1783-ocean on one side, Mississippi River on the other side, Louisiana Purchase-Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, N & S Dakota. Original-won from Revolutionary war, bought Louisiana purchase from France, annexed Texas, bought Mexican cession, Oregon territory received from Great Britain with treaty.

Texas War for Independence (1835-36),Mexican American war(1846-48)-

Mexicans invited immigrants to Texas. Texas-no slaves, become a Roman catholic, follow all Mexican laws. Most brought slaves and wouldn't convert. Fought for independence-Battle of the Alamo-1836, Mexicans won and killed all American men, Alamo became the battle cry. 

Mexican American war-boundary dispute. Mexico thought it was Nueces river, America said Rio Grande river. we received Mexican cession for 24 mil. 

Civil War (1861-65)- fought between north and south over states rights. South seceded when Lincoln became President. North won-more land, more railroad, more factories to make supplies, more industrialized, stronger navy, more people, better President, stronger government. South-knew land, better generals, more reason to fight, better handling of weapons, 

Reconstruction (1865-77)- period of time after the Civil War in which the South had to be rebuilt and reorganized and brought back into the Union. Republicans-party of change, north. Democrat-racist, white supremacist, south. Rebuild south economically, socially, politically and physically. Split south into 5 military districts controlled by US, 13-15 Amendments, Freedmen's Bureau-most blacks couldn't read or write-help them get education and job training, lasted 12 years, North controlled south government, "carpetbaggers"-north who moved to south, "scalawags"-traitors, southerners who helped northerners. Gov-set up schools, raised taxes, built railroads, industrialized, helped blacks. Government-accused of widespread corruption by southerners. 

Left deep divisions, when north left south, right white racist men took over, Jim Crow laws and segregation, blacks lost rights until 1964. Compromise of 1877-settles disputed presidential election-Tilden-S-won popular vote and electoral votes, four states with disputed votes. South agreed to give Republicans the election and Hayes would remove Reconstruction. 

Articles of Confederation-our first government, failed, all power went to states, 

George Washington-precedent setting President

Industrial Revolution- building roads, healthcare systems, school systems, less agricultural

Women's Rights Movement-Seneca conference, started in late 1800's, started push for Women's rights,
