  • great oppertunity for trade and travel (the Mountains)
  • Allowed Greece to get natural resources- timber, metals, usable farmland
  • Land-
  • Rugged mountains covered about 3/4 of ancient Greece
  • Mountains- dividers for different regions
  • Played role in wars- hard to move through mountains
  • Climate-
  • Upper 40's in winter
  • Lower 80's in summer
  • Climate allowed for many outdoors activities.

  • elegant civilization taht had great power in 3000BC
  • Writen, Language
  • Design
  • Trade
  • Use ships to trade goods.

Mycenaeans

  • heavily influenced by Minoans
  • Came from Indo-European migrants
  • Dominated Greece from 1600BC- 1100BC

Trojan War

Dorian

  • Spoke a kind of Greek
  • Not as advanced
  • No writing system
  • Story telling
  • Best Story teller Homer
  • Adapted to the area  culcure
  • City-States were formed from the tribal or clan control.
  • Polis- made up of a city and its surrounding countryside, whisch include numerous villages.
  • Citizens of the polis would come together to meet at an acropolis to discuss their city government
  • Not all sity-states had the same form of government.

Monarchy

  • State ruled by a king
  • hereditary
  • Some rulers claim that they have a divine right to rule- god has put them on the earth to rule people
  • Practuced in Mycenae by 2000B.C

Aristocracy

  • State ruled by nobility
  • Rules= heretitary and based on ties, socill rank and wealth
  • Social status and wealh support rulers athority
  • Practiced in Athens prior

Oligrchy

  • State Rules by a small group of citizen
  • Rule is based on wealth and or ability
  • Ruling group controls military
  • Practiced in Sparta by 500BC

Direct Democracy

  • State rules by the citisens
  • Rule based on citizenship- not everyone living there had citizenship
  • Majority rules
  • Athen by 500 BC

Athens

  • 600 BC tsking steps to democracy
  • Major reforms for the nest 100 years that would eventually lead to a democracy in 500BC

Darco

  • Developed a leagl code based on the idea that all Athenians, rich and poor were equal under law
  • Very harse punishment for any crime
  • Bilieved in debt slavery
  • the word "draconian" has come to mean "extreme cuelty of severity"

Solon

  • No citizen should own another
  • organized Athens into four social classes based on wealth
  • Only top 3 classes could hold political office<</body>
