The questions for this section are...What caused the Industrial Revolution to really take off? What were some inventions in the late 1800's and the effect on lives?I learned that there are numerous things that caused the Industrial Revolution some of which included. One reason was that the United States had numerous amounts of natural resources. Another reason was the the United States Government had a laissez faire aproach and they stayed out of the businesses way, had very few laws, and always sided with the businesses. I learned that another reason was that the U.S. had a growing urban population and the immigrants provided cheap labor. I also learned that another reason is that the United States who believed in industry such as Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller, and other wealthy people. I learned that they were called Captains of Industry and Robber Barons. The final reason that I learned that caused the Industrial Revolution to take off was that the U.S. now had oil, railroads, and the Bessemer Steel Process. Some inventions that had on effect on our lives were the inventions of the lightbulb, typewriter, and the telephone. I learned that the typewriter was invented by Christopher Scholes, his invention revolutionized businesses because they could now keep records and take notes. Another invention that I learned about was the telephone. The telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell, it made the world flat and made it easier to communicate. The final invention that we talked about was the lightbulb be Thomas Edison. I learned that it worked during the day and night and made the working days longer.Next Austin presented on Chapter 6 Section 2. The questions for this section are...What impact did railroads have on the US?Why were many people upset with the railroads? What did the Grangers or government do to regulate the railroads? The railroads had a huge impact on the U.S. because the railroads set up time zones. The railroads caused many new towns to be set up, this also started new markets and industries. I learned that t also made the country a lot smaller because people could transport almost anything to almost anywhere. I learned that many people were upset with the railroads because most of the time the farmers that needed to transport things were being overcharged because of lack of competition. I learned that they were also upset because they were loud and took up a lot of space and were very noisy. Next we talked about what the Grangers or the government did to regulate the railroads. I learned that the Interstate Commerce Act the government could come in and see how much the railroads were charging and make them change their prices, it was made it try and make the prices more fair. I learned that the farmer made up the Granger Laws, there laws set up maximum rates that they could be charged for shipping things. There was also a court case that we talked about, it was called Munn vs. Illinois. I learned that the Supreme Court sided with the Grangers so, the Interstate Commerce Act was established.
