The War with Iraq in 1990

The main reason we went to war with Iraq in 1990 was to push Iraq out of Kuwait. Iraq had apparently gone into Kuwait, invading it with troops and tanks and was then trying to threated Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia was our ally and a major oil supplier for us so we needed them. Other reasons we jusified going into Iraq was the fact that they had biological and chemical weapons, and that they had a nuclear weapon program. Another reason was that Saddam Hussein was abusing his people, and going against all human rights. This I think is so sad that anyone in the world could just sit around and watch as these people are abused and forced around, so I think that we did the right think in invading Iraq because we couldn't wait to see what would happen. No, it would have been too late for that so I think we made the right choice.

So the Senate voted and the outcome was 52-47 and the House of Representatives was 250-183 both supporting the military efforts in Iraq. There was this one woman who said she was a nurse and worked in the Kuwait City hospital. She said that she remembered the Iraqi soldiers pulling babies out of incubators and letting them die on the floor.People said that it pushed the public and Congress towards the war with Iraq. So apparently six Congressmen changed their opinon because of her testimony. A year after the war was over this was found to be false. The woman was part of the Kuwaiti Royal Family, and she wasn't even living in Kuwait during the any of the Iraqi invasion or war at all.

This really suprised me. I mean when you really think about it if she hadn't done this we might have not gone to the war. If I were one of those six Congressmen I would have been really angry. Of course the Iraqi troops still did some horrible things, but I would still feel really bad.
