1. Understand the causes of the stock market crash and Great Depression
- Stock Market Crash- over speculation- people bought on margin too much
Debt and watered stock- overproduction- bank borrowing

2. Understand the impact the stock market crash and Great Depression had on the country and world as well as on the lives of people in the United States
- Great Depression- affects- businesses lose millions of dollars- thousands of people lose their jobs- overproduction because people weren't buying their goods=under-consumption
- dust bowl (terrible agriculture)- people went hungry- prices on crops went up
- high tariff on imported goods
- taxes only benefited the rich
- Hoovervilles, breadlines
- Social Security/ Welfare was created for those in need

3. Understand what the United States government did to help alleviate the problems the great Depression brought to our country
- New Deal Programs- Franklin D. Roosevelt- created jobs- CCC- Labor Jobs for Men, WPA(Federal Project #one) provided jobs and money, FERA (same as FDR), paid students to stay in school, PWA, created many jobs, AAA-Farmers,  

4. Understand the causes, effects and major events of WWII
Germany
- Treaty of Versailles- Germany had to pay for war reparations- left them in severe debt and feeling hateful towards the allies- All their territory was taken away
- Rise of Adolf Hitler- told countries he just wanted to reunite all German speaking countries (lies) - persecution of the Jews- final solution
- propaganda- Nationalism- anti Jew- imperialism
-Invaded Poland
- took over France-occupation of France- surrendered within weeks
- had somewhat of an alliance with the Soviet Union
-Battle of the Bulge- Hitler's last offensive- committed suicide in his bunker in Berlin
Japan
-Treaty of Versailles- left them out- made them feel less powerful (second class)
- War Goals- keep America out of the war and have them trade with them again
- Hideki Tojo- Prime minister- Hirohito emperor
-invasion of Manchuria- rich in raw minerals
- Attack on Pearl Harbor- wanted to wipe out the US's pacific fleet- also invaded many other islands in the pacific that day- awoke a sleeping Giant
- Battle of Midway- Japan became very defensive
US
Attack on pearl harbor brought us into the war
- President- Franklin D. Roosevelt- college at Harvard- got polio in 1921
- Harry S. Truman- took over once Roosevelt died of a stroke
- helped end the war
Soviet Union
-Joseph Stalin- planned to be a priest- killed the most people in the war ( more than Hitler)
- invaded Poland with Germany- also invaded Finland, Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania
- while fighting the Germans, the Soviets kept retreating so the Germans would just have a longer supply line- would burn everything to the ground
-wanted to survive the German Invasion
-Battle for Moscow (never taken over)
- Allies with the US, but did not trust one another, only had a common enemy- Hitler
Italy
Mussolini- rose to power by marching the streets of Rome- wanted to restore Italy's Empire
- pushed Italy into war- Italy wasn't ready and he hadn't built up a strong enough army
- ended up always coming to Hitler for aid
- people turned against him- shot and killed him and hung him by his feet
- became part of the Allies
Britain
-only major Allies force in Europe that was still standing
- Neville  Chamberlain- prime minister before the war- wasn't strong enough
- Winston Churchill appointed Prime Minister during war
- battle of Britain
- was constantly being bombed at night

5. Understand how/why the Allies won WWII
-Hitler had invaded the Soviet Union too late- many German soldiers did not survive the cold winter
- army spread too thin
- Soviet forces pushed them out eventually back into Berlin
- Germans could not outmatch the Royal Air Force- they lost the Battle of Britain
- D-Day- Allied Forces charge on the beaches of Normandy, France- and slowly and surely take back France
- Hitler commits suicide - V-E Day- ( Victory day in Europe)
US breaks Japan's code
- drops atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki

6. Understand the causes, effects, goals, and major events of the Cold War.
Soviet Union and US only world powers left standing after WWII- Capitalism vs. Communism
- only two countries with nuclear weapons
- The " Red Scare"- McCarthy scared people into thinking there were many communist spies in our country- accused innocent people of being communists
- NATO- peace system setup
- Nuclear Test Ban Treaty- banned countries from doing nuclear tests
- Kennedy and the Cuban Missile Crisis- Soviets had set up missiles in Cuba pointing right at the heartland of the US
- Berlin Wall- blocked Soviet Germany and US Germany in two- Soviets cut off supply routes that the US was using- US flew in the goods West Berlin needed for a few months

7.Understand the causes, effects, and major events of the Korean Conflict
Korea was split in two- North communist- South Democratic
- Soviet Union did not want election of a leader for the North
- Kim II lied to Stalin and Zedong about going to war- told each of them that they sided with him when in reality they didn't
- MacArthur was pushing towards invading China, got fired

8.Understand the causes, effects, and major events of the Vietnam Conflict
Again, country split in two, North communist vs. South Democratic
- Gulf of Tonkin Resolution- authorized president Johnson to take all measures to retaliate against the Vietnamese that attacked our ship and sunk it
- people believe that this was fake- just so Johnson could go to war  
- Americans saw what the soldiers were doing in Vietnam= Anti- War Americans-
protests  
- Paris Peace Accords- US pulled out and fighting stopped
- North invades, takes over, all of Vietnam becomes communist
- Many Veterans that came home were not treated well- spat upon

9.Understand the causes and effects of the Persian Gulf Wars, 9-11 and the War on Terror
Persian Gulf Wars- Iraq invaded Kuwait and claimed to have weapons of mass destruction
- US put sanctions on Iraq and brought in weapons inspectors
- The No Fly Zone
- US went in and killed Saddam, cleared out the invaders of Kuwait
- Al Qaeda strengthened  
9-11- two American planes were hijacked and flown into the Twin Towers in New York City ( Al Qaeda flew planes in the towers, including the Pentagon and another into a field that day)
- 3,000 people died
- US went to war against Afghanistan
- patriotism increased- good
War on Terror
- Osama Bin Laden killed in Pakistan
- Osama's Letter to America
- supported Israel- sanctions on Iraq
Bush Doctrine
Now- ISIS has been terrorizing the middle east since the US had left Iraq
another form of Al Qaeda basically
