Soooo, Barrack Obama won a Nobel Peace Prize.. woopty-doo. Time to continue with presentations... starting with Chapter 7, Lesson 1, by Tara Benner,The New ImmigrantsChapter 7, Lesson 1Ch. 7.1:Why did immigrants come to the US?work, famine, land shortageWhere did immigrants come from?Europe, Latin America, ChinaWhat problems/issues did immigrants face on the trip over and once they got here?Steam Ship, atleast a week long trip. Traveled in super cheap rooms, having to sleep in lice infested bunks, disease spread, food was gross, some people died, extremes of weather, dirty, stinky, sweaty, way gross. They were asked very hard questions and were put through hard tests not only about knowledge but you had to be in certain physical shape you had to have money and ect.Why did some people want to put restriction on immigration? What were those restrictions?People wanted to put a restrict on immigration because of racism and they were nativists. They did not want the natives to come in. They were very selfish and did not like them taking jobs. The immigrants were willing to work for less so it was hard to ask for a raise because the boss would just be like no thanks I'll just fire you are hire this immigrant that is willing to work for measly wages. They thought they were better getting paid over here than they were from where they came from so they figured that they were doing pretty good. In 1882 the Chinese Exclusion act was passed. This act banned entry to all Chinese except students, teachers, merchents, and government officials. The other restriction was called the Gentlemen's Agreement. In 1907-1908 Sanfrancisco segregated school and seperated Japanese children from white children. They compromised to join Japanese and White children at school if they stopped sending over people.Immigration- late 19th century and the early 20th century many immigrants arived from places such as Europe, and Latin America, and they also came from asian countries such as China and stuff.. People because of famine, land shortage, religious/political conflicts, and there were people called the "Birds of passage" who were people who came to work for money and then just went back home.Nearly 20 million Europeans arrived between 1890 and 1920. They came because the Jews were being run out by Pogroms in Russia.. and also famine, rising population, job shortage, and land shortage.Ellis Island- Europeans had to pass through Ellis Island. They had to pass a series of tests, like health exams, no felonies, they had to have atleast $25, and they had to be physically able to work. If they did not pass the test they were sent home and never allowed to come back. Having to go through this island was quite a difficulty.300,000 Chinese arived from 1851-1835. They were brought by the gold rush. A lot of them had jobs on plantations in Hawaii. People were very racist against them so they were treated very poorly. They helped build railroads but this was stopped by the government. They were treated like savages by natives. In 1920, 260,000 people came from Jamacia, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and other islands. 700,000 immigrants came from Mexico by 1910. They traveled for work. The Chinese had to go through Angel Island instead of Ellis Island. Angel Island was much much much more harsh. They were kept in dirty cells before being questioned. None were admitted unless they were students teachers or merchants. They had to prove that they had a husband or father in the US. They were asked difficult questions so they would be forced to leave. They went through such a hard process because of racism. If you were a white anglo saxon prodistent, those were like the people who were already over here. People from China were not liked as much as the WASP immigrants. (White Anglo Saxon Prodistent.)*Tomorrow at the library to get extra credit go sign in at the library watch the presentation take pictures and then go home and blog about it.
