African americans moving into cities caused high tensionHousingThe people had very cramped housing in very bad conditions if they lived in the cities. If the people chose to live on the outskirts of the town they lived in better condition, but then had to travel to get to work. Transportation was improved in the 1800s so it was easier for the people to travel to their jobs. The water in the cities was usually filthy, and most of the time the houses did not have indoor plumbing. During this time most cities were in problem, but this was the time of solutions.Because of the poor living conditions at the many things were developed to help the living. During this time crime went way up because the population increased. Most of the buildings were made of wood and were tightly packed so there were a lot of fires.Jane Addams was the leader of the whole house, which was a settlement house to help poor people, which helped people get ahead in their lives. This came from the social gospel movement, because people thought that God would want them to help the poor people, one of these people that felt the calling was Jane Addams. The house game them education, job training, and food, and a place to stay, and that stuff.
