Heard that there was gold in the US and came over. Heard of industrial boom which promised jobs for almost evetyone.Where did immigrants come from?---Eurpeans(Europe); Italy; Austria; Hungary; and Russia...Chinese and Japanese( China and Japan)... They West Indies and Mexico.What problems/issues did immigrants face on the trip over and once they got here?---Steamship was the cheapest way to get to the Americas. Many died because of sanitary reasons. Had to go through tests and some had to have translators to help them because most of them didn't spead english. They would be put in a detention-like bulding to wait for their results and very insanitary. The immigrants were very religious and sometimes conflicted with the newer religions that had come to the US before the immigrants.Why did some people want to put restriction on immigration? What were those restrictions?---Natitivists were people originally living in the US didn't like the immigrants because of their different religions-1897 congress passed bill said that immigrants must read 40 words of english. Anti- Asian sentiment. Jobs scarse to chinese would accept low wages. Labor groups were scared about jobs. 1882- Congress passed Chinese Exclusion Act; banned all entry to all chinese. Except students, teachers, merchants, tourists, and government officials; Law repealed in 1943. Gentlemen's agreement; alot of segregation towards chinese. 1907-1908; Roosevelt made deal with Japan that they would limit the number of immigrants coming to the US.Ch. 7.2- Challenges of UrbanizationWhy did cities grow so quickly in the late 1800's and early 1900's?-- Immigrants that came over because of the technology boom. Farmers moving into the cities.What problems did cities face due to the rapid increase in population?--Cities overcrowded. Sanitation issues. 1879; law passed for sanitation issues.What did some people do to try to help the bad situation in the cities?--
