Jan. 13-17

Monday- Sedition Act targeted Anakist, socialist, and communist (those who criticized the government). The Palmer Raids were raids conducted by the Justice Department. They would arrest people that were suspicious of being radicals. (1919-1920) Over 1000 people were arrested, but 75% were released. Mailbox bombings and strikes. More than 500 foreign citizens were deported. J. Edgar Hoover was the head of the FBI. 1920 rights were taken away. In the Sacco and Vanzetti case, two men robbed and murdered a paymaster and his guard as they transferred over 15,000 dollars. A gun of one of them was found at the scene of the murder. Because of the red scare they were guilty with very little evidence. Immigration act of 1924 greatly reduced immigration from darker-skinned people. President Harding was the first republican president in the 1920's. 

Tuesday- The Bolshevic revolution turned Russia into a communist country which put fear into people that communism would take over. Bombs, riots, and strikes cause fear of communism in America. Democracy in a government where people have a say. Capitalism is where the people own the businesses. Both go hand in hand and are similar. CCCP in Russian is the USSR in American. ACLU- Flights back against government abuse. 1920 election Harding vs. Cox. Harding dies from a heart attack and Calvin Coolidge did very little. 1928 Herbert Hoover won against Al Smith. Republicans are known as conservatives and want to lower taxes, high tariffs, lower immigration, and less government. They believe in the Trickle Down Theory- when the rich are helped then prices are lowered and job pay increases. They believe in Lassez-faire. Rugged individualism it's up to yourself to get what you want. A return to normalcy and individualism.
