February Week 23-27

Monday: Class Quiz.  Went over all the maps for the test tomorrow. Forum post leaders shared their stories.

Tuesday:  Had our map test.  Just did the test the whole time. 

Wednesday:  Verbal people finished taking their tests. Went over more of the constitution.  One current event 

Thursday: Went over two of our maps 

Friday: Did two more maps. Talked about Project 

Current Events:

- Chris Kyle trial- Eddie Ray Ruth guy was found guilty 2/25/15.  Killed Chris and his friend.  

- What color is the dress? The dress is really black and blue. 

- Net neutrality- FCC said no, they will still regulate the internet and no one business can just take it over.

Constitution:  

Was drafted in 1789- still what we use today and go by.  

What is the US Constitution?-  Set of Laws on how to govern and keep our country equal.  Why did it come about?- Because we wanted to get from Great Britain and make our own country.  The Articles of Confederation was out first government.

What is Separation of Powers?- Keep the power all around not just one person, it breaks our powers in branches.  

What is the Checks and Balance system?- All the branches of government check on each other to make sure they are not abusing their powers.  

Who was the "Father of the Constitution?- James Madison.  

What are the two houses of congress?- Senate and House of Representatives.  How many Senators? How is that number determined? There are 100 two from each state.  How many people are in the House of Representatives? How it that number determined? There are 435 it is determined by the population of your state.  Length of term/Age requirement?- A term for the person in the House is 2.  The senate term is 6 years.  You have to be 25 to run to be in the House.  You have to be 30 to run to be Senate.

 What powers does Congress have?- Declare war and make laws.  

What is the length of a President's term?- 4 years.  How old to be president? 35.  What is the longest amount of time a President can now serve? No more than 10.  Which president served the longest is US history? How long?- Franklin D. Roosevelt- He was elected 4 terms- about 12 years died about 1 month into 4th.  What powers does a President have?- Can veto or sign laws and commander and chief in the military.

What are the qualifications for being in the US Supreme Court?- There are no requirements.  How do justices of the Supreme Court get their job? They get appointed by the President.  How do they lose their job?- The retire or die or get impeached.  What powers do they have?- Interpret laws of the constitution.  Who is the current Chief Justice is?- John Roberts.  There are 9 of them.  

What is the constitution?  Is the supreme law of land.  Foundation of source of legal authority in the land.  The Articles of Confederation was the first government of the U.S. that failed, gave all the powers to the states.

 Basic principles- Popular Sovereignty, Limited government, Separation of Powers, Federalism. It was written May 25th.

Article I- Legislative Branch: Bicameral, Reps serve for two year terms, Senators serve for 6 year terms. Important Powers: make laws, set taxes, Carrel war, override Vetoes, borrow money, print money.  

Article II- Executive Branch- President and Vice president are elected to 4 years terms.  Have to be 35, 14 year resident, and natural born citizen, elected by the electoral college, important powers: Commander-in-Chief, Grant pardons, make treaties, appoint federal officers, and ensure laws are executed. Impeachment- President, Vice president, and all civil officers can be removed for crimes.

Article 3- Judicial Branch: Supreme Court judges, important powers are mostly to make sure laws are constitutional or not.  Cases involving ambassadors go straight to Supreme Court.  Judicial Review comes later.  

Article 4: Relations among states Articles 4, Section 2- Rights of Citizens.  Article 4, Section 3: New states Article 4, Section 4- Guarantees to states 

Article 5- Tells how the constitution may be amended (Changed) 

Article 6- Says the constitution is the supreme law of the land 

Article 7- Says the Constitution will be the law if the nine states ratify it
