Monday- The prince of Austria-Hungary was assassinated which led to Austria-Hungary declaring war on Serbia. Main cause of WWI MINES. M-Militarism/ I-Imperialism/ N-Nationalism/ E- Economic Competition/ S- System of Alliances.
Tuesday- After the assassination, there was diplomacy to settle things down. However, because of the lack of communication things did not work out, which led to the start of WWI. The events of the war. Archduke Ferdinand was assassinated. Austria-Hungary sends ultimatum to Serbia. Serbia accepts everything except to let police into their country. Austria-Hungary goes to war on Serbia after Germany gives them carte blanche. Russia mobilizes to support Serbia. Germany declares war on Russia. Then France helps Russia, and Great Britain helps France. done. Turkey killed 1.5 Armenians. France got a lot of land from Germany. Great Britain gets German colonies in Africa. and Turkish colonies in the Mid-East. Italy wanted land from Austria-Hungary. Russia wanted control of the straits. Austria-Hungary just wanted to survive. Germany wanted land from France, most of Western Russia, French and British colonies of Africa, and sphere of influence of Austria-Hungary (overall LAND). America wanted the 14 points.
Wednesday- Causes of U.S. involvement in the war was because Germany was sinking ships with Americans on them. The Lusitania was sunk and two years later America went to war.
Thursday- The Sussex was sunk and America was not having it. Then Germany gave the Sussex Pledge, saying that they will not sink any more unarmed ships. Then in February 1917, Germany announced that they were starting up unrestricted submarine warfare. The Zimmerman Note was sent by Germany and then intercepted by the U.S., which angered America. and we went to war. The Zimmerman Note wanted Mexico to attack America. Poncho Via was a Mexican that crossed the border and killed Americans. Teddy Roosevelt and Leonard Wood thought that we should be helping Great Britain and they pushed for war. British and American Propaganda swayed public opinion against Germany. Preparedness program, the U.S. prepared for that war which made it hard to stop from getting in. The homefront was what people back at home did during the war. Money, production, and troops is tied for number one with most important in war. During WWI production increased by 20%. The Food Administration is all about rationing this was headed by Herbert Hoover. Encouraged people to not hoard food. Their slogan was Food is Ammunition- Don't waste it. The National War Labor Board encouraged people not to go on strike. Slogan was Work or Fight. Many women were hired during this time. The Committee of Public Information gave out a lot of propaganda. The Major Goals of Propaganda was to get people to enlist, encourage patriotism, buy war bonds, conserve food, and dehumanize the enemy, always a sense of urgency.
Friday- The total casualties (civilians and military) in WWI was 40 million. 20 million deaths and 21 million wounded. there were 9.7 million military and 10 million civilians that died.
