Monday- Four major goals of progressives- help the poor, promoting moral improvement, creating economic reform, fostering efficiency. Capitalism means people own and control businesses. This leads to income inequality. Karl Marx thought socialism would be better, where everyone owns and controls everything, and the government will watch over everything to make sure everyone is equal. Soon the government would wither away and everyone would be happy. Socialism is similar to Communism. Eugene V. Debs ran for president five times in the early 1900's and never won. Two muckrakers were Upton Sinclair who wrote The Jungle was about meatpacking. Ida Tarbell showed the methods of the Standard Oil Company which soon after broke up. Fostering efficiency was scientific management to increase efficiency. The $5 day kept workers in the business. Limiting workdays to 10 hours. Muller vs. Oregon wade the 10 hour workday for women. Admonson Act. gave the 8 hour workday plus overtime. Reforming Elections started with the secret ballot, then the Direct Primary which is the process for electing the President. The 17th amendment gave direct election of senators and the 19th amendment gave women the right to vote. Chuck Grassley and Joni Ernest are Iowa's senators.

Tuesday- Diplomacy- how we officially deal with other countries around the world. Imperialism- a strong country that looks to take over smaller countries. Militarism- the belief that your country should have a strong military and use it to get what it wants. Nationalism- very proud of your country, but with detriment to other countries. Sphere of influence- where a strong country has a lot of control over a weaker area. Protectorate- A country that is protected by a larger country, maybe wanted or not wanted. Arbitration- settlement of a dispute of a third party (middle man). The Old Diplomacy Noninterventionalist- the U.S. did not intervene with foreign affairs. Isolationist- the U.S. acted alone in foreign affairs as compared to working with other nations. Passive and reactive- the U.S. waited for events to occur and then acted accordingly. America had a weak Army and Navy. The New Diplomacy Imperialisic- Going out and conquering territory. Militarism- building up military. Interventionalist- becoming more involved in other countries.

Wednesday- The Monroe Doctrine in 1823. This tells Europe to stay away from Central and South America (Western Hemisphere). Strong Nationalism- having a strong pride in their country. President Trump's focus is on America, and he believes that we need to lessen how much we spend protecting other countries. Other countries in the United Nations need to step up how much they pay for NATO. Most powerful countries in 1900 were Great Britain, Germany, and then France. Why the U.S. and other countries looked to Imperialism. The western frontier was settled in 1890. Brings military power and respect to your country. Naval bases and refueling stations. Money for natural resources as well as opening new markets to sell goods. America felt that needed to take control of dark-skinned humans.

Thursday- The central powers and the allied powers. Ottoman Empire (Turkey) dwindled. Central powers Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, Ottoman Empire. Allied powers France, Great Britain, Italy, Russia, America were the main. But also Serbia, Belgium, and others. 

Friday- Presented WWI weapons and watched videos of what led to WWI.
