Daily Summary-10/15/09

An immagrant is someone who comes to a country from another country. 30,000,000 people came to the United States in the 1900s. The Europeans came during the 1870s through the 1920s. The europeans came to the east coast. The Chinese came to the west coast which is San Fransisco during the 1850s and 1880s. The west indies came during the 1920s included Jamacia and Cuba. Ellis Island is located in New York harbor and during the 1920s tons of people came through Ellis Island to get to the US. Angel Island is in San Fransisco which was another big place where immagrants came into the US. If the immagrants who came to the US couldn't read a certain amount of lines of english or their native language they werent allowed to enter the United States. I wonder what happened to all those people who could not read were they taken back to where they were from or what. Religion was very important to the immagrants who came to the United States.

  • Some were sent back, yes. Most were passed through. Chinese and Japanese were not allowed in much more frequently due to racism.
