Puerto Rico ♥ Danielle's Weekly Blog Post #6

I, Danielley Hernando, am one quarter Puerto Rican. Yes I know, with my albino like skin, suspiciously blond hair, and dazzling blue eyes (don't act like you haven't noticed them) it's quite hard to believe that I've got some spicy Latina blood in me. But it occured to me the other day while I was pondering my next blog topic (I do that oh so often...) That I don't really know much about this tiny island. Who cares about Denmark and Germany?! Let's do Puerto Rico! :D

The self-governing unincorporated territory of the United States is an archipelago (a group of many islands in a large body of water) . Good ol' Christopher Columbus arrived in Puerto Rico during his second voyage on November 19, 1493. Remember? He sailed the ocean blue in 1492. He found the ancestors of lil ol' me in 1493.A lot of people are confused on whether Puerto Rico is part of the United States, and if so, why is it not a state? And as I understand it, this is how it went down...So in the late 19th century, the US was involved in the Spanish-American War. Spain lost and as one of the conditions of the Treaty of Paris, it gave up Puerto Rico, Cuba, and several other islands. Puerto Rico started off as a colony of the US but after a few revolts and an attempted assassination of President Truman... The US decided that maybe things should change.

In 1947 Puerto Rico adopted the new name "Estado Libre Asociado de Puerto Rico" or Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. They elect governors and have their own local constitution. It has a republican form of government but is ultimately ruled by the US and as such, the president of the US.Puerto Rico is an “unincorporated territory” of the United States which according to the United States Supreme Court is “a territory appurtenant and belonging to the United States, but not a part of the United States.” Puerto Rico is subject to the Congress’ plenary powers under the “territorial clause” of Article IV, sec. 3, of the U.S. Constitution. So basically, Puerto Rico is part of the United States, but it's not! ... I know! It totally makes sense! :DRecent studies have shown that Puerto Rican ancesty composed primarily of European, then Native American, and finally South African American. So yes. I'm not only ultra-European, I'm part African American. That's me for you. Random and uber motley!

  • i do recall! the big star behind? ... i think? and it being YOUR state. pretty beastly. they had mentioned that on wiki but gosh it was all so complicated lol.
  • Interesting! Did you know that there are votes occasionally on whether PR will become a state? I, of course, have a copyrighted idea if PR indeed becomes the 51st state. I think I might have mentioned to CWI last year. Do you recall?
