Focused on collective bargaining or negotiation between the representatives of labor and management. Eugene Debs- made the first major attempt to form an industrial union. The American Railway Union- won their first strike in 1894. The Great Strike iof 1877, The Haymarket Affair and the Homestead Strike.Ch. 6.3:-What was Social Darwinism and how did it apply to business?-Explain how companies formed monopolies(vertical/horizontal integration, trusts).Monopolies- getting rid of competition in a piticular. They lower prices that people want to pay, and get all the business. Then when companies go out of business, he gets all the business because he is the only business left, and he can raise prices to whatever they want.-How did the government try to regulate business?-What are labor unions and what is their purpose?A group of people that got together to improve working conditions, want better hours, better pay, health insureance, life insureance, ECT.Were labor unions successful in achieving their goals? Explain/Give examples.7.3 Politics in the Gilded AgeGilded- to be covered with gold. Looks good on the outside, but messy on the inside.Political Machine- group that controls a political party. Gave voters services for political and financial assistance. (Every city had a Political Machine) its not a machine its a party. There was one in every city. The bosses were assigned to try to gain votes poliotical and ward posses worked together to get things done quickly. The immigrants provided easy votes and early bosses were imigrants so they understood hardships.Corrupt Government- members of political machines would commit fraud by casting numerous votes which helped businesses in turn for cash. Graft- use their candidate's status in office for pesonal gain. TAke bribes allowed gambling to continue. People wanted power and money. The rich got richer, and they poor got poorer. Steel from everyone and give to the rich.Boss Tweed- William Tweed became leder of the Tammy Hall (powerful democratic machine in New York) Led the Tweed Ring. Tweed Ring- Scandal- made tax payers pay $13 mission, and $178 million a day. The project only cost $3 million about $7 million now. The ten million went to the members of the Tweed Ring.
