Friday! (:7-1 The New Immigrants....In the Late 19th century and early 20th century many immigrants arrived in the U.S. Many reason they came were famine, land shortage, religious or political conflicts, and the "Birds of Passage" who came just for money then went back home. Europe, Latin America, and Asia were many places they came from. Nearly 20 million Europeans arrived between 1890 and 1920. They came because of famine, rising population, job shortages, lond shortages, andJews were being run out by pogroms in Russia.Ellis Island was a main passage way the Europeans had to pass through. Immigrants had to pass the test of health exams, no contagious diseases, never could have been convicted of a felony, they had atleast $25, they were physically able to work. If they failed any of these test they were sent home. There were 300,000 Chinese arrived from 1851 to 1883. They were brought by the gold rush. Many chinese immigrants helped build railrods. 30,000 found jobs in Hawaii on plantations. Chinese were treated very poorly, children were taught in different schools, took low wage jobs, and were treated like savages by Native Americans. In 1920, 260,000 came from Jamaica, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and other islands. 700,000 immigrants from Mexicao in 1910. They traveled to the US because of work was scarce in their countries. The Chinese had to go through Angel Island and their test were much worse. They were kept in dirty cells before being questioned. You either had to be a student, teacher, or merchant... or if you were married to one. They were asked very difficult questions so very few of them would be admitted into the U.S.>-Why did immigrants come to the US?famine, land shortage, religious or political conflicts, and the "Birds of Passage" who came just for money then went back home>-Where did immigrants come from?Europe, Latin America, and Asia>-What problems/issues did immigrants face on the trip over and once they got here? They had to go through tough tests Ellis Island in the east and Angel Island in the west. trip took one - three weeks. many traveled in the cheapest type of transportation. had to sleep in lice infected bunks. disease spread quickly. bad food>-Why did some people want to put restriction on immigration? What were those restrictions?many people were racist, nativist didnt want immigrants to come into their own country, selfish, they didnt like them taking jobs and keeping wages low. the chinese restriction law was passed and banned entry of all chinese exempting a certain group of people.
