Thursday, October 15th...Once again, we went over Whitney's presentation of Chapter 5 Section 3...-Farmers and the Populist Movement-Two major political parties divided because of economic interests (Republicans and Democrats) .. Issue was which metal would be the nation's monetary sysytem. Money was worthless to the people if it could not be turned into gold or silver.Williams Jennings Bryan was a former Nebraska congressman and also was the editor of the Omaha World-Herald. They didnt know if the should join forces with the sympathetic candidates in the major parties or if they should nominate their own candidates. Bryan addresses an important speech called the "Cross of Gold". He later won the Democrative nomination. The end of populism, Bryan's free-silver stant led Democrats to nominate their own candidate. Mckinley was the Republican candidate and he carried the East. Bryan carried the South and the farm vote of the middle east. Middle West brought Mckinely into office because of their fear of inflation which made populism collapse...Key Questions..-What problems did farmers face on the Great Plains?> Railroad abuses, overcharge, banks foreclose, farmers being in debt and not being able to pay off their loans.Chapter 7 Section 2...-The Challenges of Urbanization-Most new immigrants moved to cities for housing and better jobs. Americanization Movement made to assimilate immigrants into our way of life. Increases in city population was due to farming improvements, more people moved to the city. African Americans moving to cities caused high tension between people. Immigrants and people in the cities had two options for housing. Either on the outskirts and having to go through to town to get to jobs and other places, second option was to live in a small, one room house, often shared with other families with no ventilation systems. People could move around faster due to public transportation and increased how people could get to their jobs. Water in cites were bad and had all sorts of diseases in it. After they cleaned it up the water was still bad. Houses didnt have indoor plumbing so trash was thrown out in the streets. Crime was increases because of all the new people in the cities. Fire was a major problem in the cities. Most houses were made of wood. Fire, wood = not good.Jane Addams was the leader of a settlement house. Helped people become educated, job training, gave them food and a place to stay...Key Questions-Why did cities grow so quickly in the late 1800's and early 1900's?> Immigrants moved to the cities for housing and better jobs. Farmers moved to cites because machinery replaced them.-What problems did cities face due to the rapid increase in population?> public places became dirty and unsanitary. terrible living conditions. crime. fires. lack of police force, fire fighters.-What did some people do to try to help the bad situation in the cities?> come up with new ways to keep cities clean. started police forces and fire fighters. started the developement of garbage and sewage systems.
