Will Football be a School Sport in the Future

Will football be a high school sport in the future? With falling numbers, and studies linking football to brain injuries, some high schools are disbaning their football programs, but how far will it go? From 2016 to 2017 the number of high school football players dropped by 25,900. This could be because of parents holding their kids back, the sport's loss of popularity, and other reasons. Several studies every year link football with brain injuries during high school and in the future. Studies show football can impact the way players think and react to situations in negative ways. This is causing several schools in the east coast to disband their football program. Most all of the schools disband their football program for safety concerns of the players. The other reason being not being able to fill the roster. Every year the trend has continued to grow as more high schools kill off football for safety reasons.

On the contrary, many schools want to keep their football program for reasons including, keeping the kids active, more scholarship opportunities and it profits the school. Many parents and students join football because it keeps them active and in shape. Football is a great way to remain healthy in the present and future and it relieves stress. Schools also want to keep football programs going because it gives opportunities to students that might not have enough money for college. Over 10,965 football scholarships are given out each year. Football gives students the opportunity to go to college if they might not have been able to afford it. Finally schools profit in many ways from the football program. Not only does the school make money off football games and concessions that they can use for other sports but football is also a great way to advertise and bring people together.

In my opinion, football will not be banned in schools. I understand people's concerns about injuries, but I think the positives out way the negatives. Being a football player I can say that playing is worth the risk and in practice we learn the correct way to do things so the risk becomes less apparent. In football you make friends, get exercise, learn responsibility and much more. For these reaons, I don't think football will be banned, and shouldn't be banned.

Do you think football should be banned in schools? Why or why not?

Are you a football player? If so, do you think about the risk of playing football?

If football is banned, do you think other sports like soccer and wrestling should also be banned?

  • Great topic choice and well done John!!

  • I really hope it is not banned and don't think it will be. Other sports may become more popular but football will still be a huge sport like it is today. Kids should have the option to play what they want but also know the risk that comes with it.

  • I don't think it will be banned, but maybe another sport will become more popular over it. I think football programs around the country will stay active, but another "safer" sport will over run it. Like basketball or soccer.

  • i don't think it should be banned because i personally love playing the sport. The only thing i could think of being a risk is concussions but other then that i think its a pretty safe sport. People also love watching their favorite highschool football teams play on friday nights.

  • I think football shouldn't be banned because it is the biggest sport in America. I am not a football player, so I don't worry about the risk. I think that if they ban football, they might as well ban other sports too. I don't see this happening because of how much money it makes schools.

  • I think football shouldnt be banned. It keeps althetes healthy and fit if they do it the correct way and practice the correct way they wont get hurt. I it also gives the althlete a way to earn a scholarship. plus makes money for the school.

  • I think football should not be banned because it gives the kids more oportunities to do things. I am not a football player. Also if football is banned what about soccer no head gear only shin guards, wresling you also have headgear and if you get rid of those then what about baseball?

  • I think football will always be populer, because people like to see physical contact sports. Football is also a big money maker with the NFL alone taking in billions a year.

  • I think schools should not ban football. Since we have a field that was just updated. Why would we put that money to waste and let it sit there. I am a football player, I do kind of think of the risks such as tearing a ACL, or breaking something. But I do not think about head injuries. If the sport is taught right by the coaches there would be very little head injuries. If football ever gets banned, sports like soccer and wrestling should also be banned. Soccer is players running around without any pads or anything to protect them.

    • I also think it would be unreasonable for schools and booster clubs to throw all of this money into complexes and equipment, just for the sport to be discountinued in the future.
