Why is the U.S so involved in the Ukraine war?

In the past six months, the world has seen a rise in tension between Russia and Ukraine, as Russia forcefully invaded Ukraine intending to gain control. What was expected to be a quick operation has turned into a long and deadly war. The United States responded to the invasion by imposing sanctions and providing billions of dollars worth of weaponry. Despite the ongoing war and domestic inflation, many Americans still support American involvement in Ukraine.

According to a recent poll by The Chicago Council on Global Affairs, at least 70% of Americans support continuing economic and military aid to Ukraine without sending troops. Even when presented with the possibility of higher gas and food prices, respondents still supported Ukraine rather than suggesting that they give up some territory for a ceasefire.

Peter Rough, a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute, argues that the peace and prosperity of the US are directly linked to Europe's peace. Therefore, the US must be part of the coalition pushing back against Russia. George Beebe, a former Russia specialist at the CIA and a current member of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, agrees that the US cannot allow Russia to take Ukraine by force. However, Beebe questions how long Congress will want to keep funding a war that neither side is winning nor losing. He believes that the US has two options: continue military support with no end in sight or work towards a more realistic solution, such as Ukrainian neutrality.

While the US has not yet seriously explored the latter option, Beebe believes that if Ukraine is willing to consider it, the US should as well. Nonetheless, current US diplomacy is focused on bolstering Ukraine's position in the war and rallying other countries to do the same. US officials have stated that they would be willing to facilitate talks if Ukraine agrees and Russia is serious about diplomacy. It's clear that the US is committed to supporting Ukraine in this conflict, and that the situation remains complex and highly sensitive.

  • Good topic choice and summary but be sure to inlcude your thoughts and opinions. The two big issies is that it was posted three days late and you didn't reply to any student comments which is worth 30 points.

  • I don't think that we should give as much support as we have been giving Ukrane in the war, however I get that we are trying to help a smaller country from being invaded by a massive and very powerful country.

  • I would help if I knew how in a time of war. There is still conflict because Russia wants Ukraine's land and is forcefully trying to take it. The United States should step into the war because they are our allies and they need help at this very crucial time of war.

  • I would help in the war if the time came because I would want to help our country. There is a conflict between the two because Ukraine used to be a part of Russia and I think they want them back. I think that if we would stay out of the war we will keep a piece with Ukraine.

  • I would try my best to help in the war to support our country. there is a conflict because Ukraine used to be part of Russia and Russia wants Ukraine back. I think we should stay out of the war but it will help Ukraine stay at peace with us and other countries.

  • I would want to help in some way and so I would want the US to have some involvment. It is important for the US to protect small countries agianst  a place like Russia. We learned how this can progress when we let Germany get away with taking over countries in Europe in the 1930's.

  • I would help with the war if I had to because I dont think a big country like russia should just be able to beat up on smaller countries like ukraine. I think the U.S should step in because Ukraine would lose the war without the extra help.
