US History of Trapshooting

Trapshooting

Trapshooting is a sport where you stand 16 yards behind an underground target thrower and the thrower throws out targets. When you walk out on the line you shoot 25 shots at 25 targets. The history of trap shooting dates all the way back to the late 1700s, it originated in England and then they first started shooting in the US in the early 1800s. Before they had clay targets they would release live pigeons out of cages called “traps” and use them as targets.

In trap shooting, there are three common disciplines, they are singles, doubles, and handicaps. Singles are the most common discipline and were the first discipline ever shot, when you shoot singles you stand 16 yards back from the trap and shoot the targets as they come out of the trap. Handicaps were also shot around the time they introduced singles. Handicaps are where you back up to 19 - 27 yards and shoot single targets but you are just farther back. Doubles were introduced in the early 1900s, when you shoot doubles you stand at the 16-yard line and shoot at two targets at once instead of one at a time.

I have been shooting trap since I was about 10 years old. When I shot my first round ever I shot a 2/25 and now I average around a 22/25. I have shot 15 perfect 25/25 rounds in my 6 years of trap shooting. In my first year, I only shot singles but as I got older I have been shooting all of the disciplines. Every i have shot i have got Top Shooter for my grade.
