Strictest Abortion Law in The US

On Wednesday, Iowa law makers passed and sent the strictest abortion laws to Governor Kim Reynolds. The bill is known as the Heartbeat Bill and bans abortions when a heartbeat is detected. A heartbeat can be detected at 6 weeks, and one of the many problems people have with this is the fact that most women don't know that they are pregnant by then. This bill has received extreme criticism and it will be challenged in hopes of taking it to the Supreme Court. Reynolds has not said whether or not she will sign it or not yet. There has been a surprising rise in abortion laws in the nation which have all taken place under the Trump Administration. According to Guttmacher Institute, 19 states have adopted a total of 63 restriction for abortions in 2017. These are the highest numbers of state laws since 2013. The laws include restrictions such as; 15 bills that ban abortions after 20 weeks, and 11 bills that ban abortions due to genetic defects like Down Syndrome.

1- what is your stance on this? Do you think that it is okay for women to get abortions, or do think that they are morally wrong?

I personally feel that women should be allowed to have abortions. What if the women's life is in danger if she has a baby, or the family can't support the child emotionally or financially? What if it's a young girl in high school? Yes there are protective measures one can take;however, they don't always work. Where some people disagree with high schoolers having sex we all know it happens and no child want to tell their parents that they have been having sex with their partners. And then the question of rape comes up. If a girl is rapped and gets pregnant should she be forced to carry it out? As well as girls who have inconsistent periods.

2- Do you feel that making the cut off 6 weeks fair to the potential mother

No I don't feel that this is fair to the potential mother due to the fact that most women don't know by then. And periods fluctuate and unless you're on birth control can start a day before or after it started the previous month. Therefor this bill is using a back door to making abortion illegal.

3-Do you feel that it is right for a man to determine what goes on inside a womens body? Please defend your answer. I ask this because the majority of legislators are men

No I don't because it's my body and unless I'm physically harming myself it's no business of anyone else as to what I do with it.

  • I definitely don’t think men should have anything to do with making laws as to what happens to women’s bodies. They aren’t the ones spending 9 months carrying a child and essentially changing your lifestyle to support that unborn child. They have no business in voting for something that doesn’t and will ever concern them.

  • I personally don’t think that 6 weeks after conception is long enough to know if you’re pregnant or not. Some women don’t know until a few months in let alone 6 weeks. There really should only be restrictions on late-term abortions, which are already in place.

  • I feel that women are in control of their own bodies and that if they choose that they want an abortion, they should be allowed to receive a safe way to do so with medical professionals preforming their  procedure. Women are going to do it regardless if it’s legal or not so why no make them safe.

  • No I don't think it's right for the man to decide but you take the risk of him taking over by putting yourself in the position is your mistake. If you didn't want a baby you shouldn't have done it.

    • I don’t think “putting yourself in that position” is a good enough argument as to why you shouldn’t be allowed an abortion. Being sexually active doesn’t mean you’re mature enough to have a kid which is why birth control was invented in the first place. Having sex doesn’t mean you should have to raise a child when you are a child.

  • I think it's fair. In fact I think it should be a 0 week cut off. Once they made the choice to possibly be pregnant they can't go back. There should be no abortions because a baby is still alive just in there mother.

  • I think women shouldn't be able to get abortions. They put themself in a situation to become pregnant so they made that choice already. You don't get a second chance.

  • I guess I'm confused on what man is determining what goes  on inside a woman's body. When a woman aborts it is her choice, but it is also her loss and the worlds loss. I realize that a lot of political figures are men ,but there are a TON of pro-life women such as myself.

  • I'm going to sound really stupid and people who read this will probably either cringe or rage, but if I got anything out of reading To Kill a Mockingbird it is that "It is a sin to kill a Mockingbird" because all they do is sing. All the baby is doing is growing and trying to become a person, but every baby thats aborted because a mother "doesn't want it" is a lost chance to do good.

    • I like the point you make from "To Kill a Mockingbird." It is wrong to kill innocent life for no apparent reason which is what abortion is. It is wrong and immoral to kill the most innocent form of human life there is. If they don't want to raisea child just send it off to an adoption center.
