Should Toys Be Banded?

Toys are alwasy something kids enojy playing with. When I was a kid I loved my toys and I loved when I got new ones. I think that many kids enjoyed having toys when they were little and even kids now enjoy having toys. There has been a study that toys injury rate has increased to 40% in the United States. Its also including statistics from emergnacy departments collected between 1990-2011. There has been over 3 million children treated in emergancy rooms for toy related injurys, and a little over half the kids being injurged are 6 years and younger. Researchers habe found that the number one toy causing these injurys are ride-on toys or scooters. Dr. Gary Smith, the leader of the research, said " We know that those numbers are increasing. So its a call to action. We really do have a lot more work to do to provide safe toys for children." He also says that 40% only comes from emergancy departments, but there are also kids who don't get medical care at all.

There are also different types of toy injuries for different ages. Kids under 5 spend most of their time at home, so they get injured by inside toys. For children under 3 its choking hazards. Toys with small parts are always a hazard for smaller children and recalled toys can always be the problem. Dr. Smith recomends that parents look at Recalls.gov  before buying the toy. As for older kids it is scooters, they became very popular in 1999 but there were also lots of injurys from them. Dr.smith suggest that if you buy a scooter you should get a helmet with it and make sure your child isnt close by any street. Now that you know some hazards that toys can cause to children do you think they should be banded or do you think toys arent dangerous?

should toys  be banded?

Did you have a scooter? If so did you ever get injured from it?

  • I do not think that toys should be banned. I think that a lot of parents now get too worked up over their kids when they get hurt. I am guessing that a lot of the trips to the emergency room that you talked about are not needed. I think that a lot of these injuries could probably be fixed by a couple of bandaids and some Neosporin.

  • I personally dont think that they should be banned because they are fun when you are growing up and it gives them something to do because it would either be toys, playign outside, or being on an electronic. Personally I would rather have my child to play outside or with toys then electronics. I also think that the parents should be carful with toys they give to kids, I know alot of them try and sometimes stuff happens, but if they are getting hurt alot more then before it is either the toy manufacturer or the parents not watching them. Also if you fell off a toy then it would make you not do that again and they would have to learn that sometime, I know certain injuries can be bad, but some can also be kind os good, like if you fall off a bike then you just get a bandaid(depending on how you fall) then try again.

  • No they should not be banned. I mean if you didn't fell off your scooter or bike, did you even have a childhood? They might not be the safest if not used properly, but with a helmet on and knee and elbow pads I think kids should be good to go. I couldn't imagine what my sister would do all day if she didn't have her outdoor toys, she would probably end up annoying me.

  • I don't think that ride-on toys should get banned and feel like getting injured on a scooter or something like that is just a part of growing up. I still have a little plastic motorcycle that my brothers and I played on when we were little and my younger sister loves playing on it. She has fallen off of it quite a few times but she always gets back up and plays with it again.

  • No, but i had a skate board and i have many scars and i had many nights were i wanted to quit and sum nights with many bruses. but i never quit becasue it is a cool hobby not many people can say they can ride a skateboard.it takes time and skill to learn your not going to be a pro right away.

    • I agree, a lot of the fun time that we had as kids were on skateboards, bikes, and scooters. We might have ended up with some scars and bruises, but we walked away with plenty of stories and memories. If kids can handle getting cut up here and there, then they will need to toughen up.

    • I agree, I think its a learning expierence for kids and is an opertunity to grow. Like a kid cant just live their life without those kinds of life leassons.

  • No, i think its stupid that there trying to ban these toy like scooters and skateboards (ride-on toys) mabye they shouldent have tried them in the first place or put more research into ot before buying the. plus most thing like those are skill based toys.

  • I think that as a kid you are bound to get hurt some way or somehow, that's just part of being a kid. I'm sure there have been plenty of times where I got hurt from falling off of a bike or scooter, but I shook it off and got right back on it.  I absolutely do not think toys should get baned, that would kinda be crazy if that happened. If parents don't want their children to get hurt then they shouldn't allow them to play on or have those kinds of toys. There are plenty of "safe" toys that kids can play with without getting hurt.

  • Toys should not be banned. Kids getting injured from these toys is not the toys fault. I did also have a scooter and did hurt myself on it and it wasn't the scooters fault. It was my fault for the way I was riding it. Also, there isn't really any other way to keep a kid satisfied.
