Should there be a test or background check before getting being able to get guns

People nowadays are able to walk in, show their ID and boom, you have a gun now. But should we change that so you have to take a test or a background check and not just give guns to random people. The reason being is to show that you can handle it and not use it like a toy and potentially kill someone. Another reason is to tell who is right or wrong for getting a gun. With a background check you might find out they were a potential murderer, or you could find out that someone has a lot of accidents using tools or equipment.

The history of gun control laws starts back in 1938 with the national firearms act of 1934. Congress strengthened the gun control laws after dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in 1968. This law stopped things like mail-order guns and ammo to people who have done felons, or are fugitives, illegal drug users, the mentally ill, and the dishonorably discharged. Another way gun laws were strengthened is when congress passed the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act of 1993 as an extension of the Gun Control Act of 1968. They did this in honor of James Brady who almost died from a gun wound during an assasination attempt of the president.

According to Gale.com, in 2017 there were 39,773 gun-related deaths. After that year the federal government started putting things in to make getting a gun a little harder and thus, hopefully give guns to people who know what they're doing. Another thing that happened in 2018 was the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High school in parkland, Florida had a school shooting in february. After the shooting there were reports of seventeen people killed and seventeen injured. If this happens again in the modern day it could be a lot worse depending on the person.

So here's my questions to you

  1. Should we increase the gun rights law by making it harder to get guns?
  2. Could this help eliminate the number of gun related deaths?

  • Interesting topic even though there have been several topic releating to guns already this year. You did a good job educating people about the history of gun control laws. You could have explained a bit more that goes in to buying guns as there are background check for at least some guns.

So your summary is pretty good Jason, but you didn't reply to any comments which is worth 30 points.

  • Of course you should need have a backround check when purchasing a gun. We have a problem in America and we need to adress it. This would definitely reduce deaths to gun violence. Making it harder to get a weapon is the best way to reduce deaths to that weapon.

  • Yes I think we should start doing more thorough background checks and tests to be able to buy a gun. I do think this could help keep guns out of the wrong persons hands and also reduce the number of gun related deaths. But if someone really wanted a gun and did not pass the background check I think they would just find an alternative way.

  • I definetly think that the United States should start doing very thuro backround checks because it would help keep wepons out of the hands of criminals. However I do not think that this alone would completly eliminate gun violence. I think that several different laws need to be in place to help keep wepons out of criminals hands.

  • I feel like there should be better backround checks and stricter laws on what kind of guns you can purchase. If there were better backround checks, I bet there would be less shootings. I feel like people should get a propler training test before being able to purchase a weapon for the first time.

  • Making it harder to get guns would stop future problems, however, there are still a lot of illegal guns in circulation right now, so we should most likely attempt to focus our strengths on getting those numbers down before we start stepping into the realm of gun rights for everyone. If we remove guns from being so easy to obtain then yes the logical answer to that is yes, as fewer guns mean fewer gun-related deaths.

  • I feel that we should do more background checking but not to make it too hard to get a gun. Sometimes people need a gun for a reason like to feel safe in there homes if someone has broken in before. I feel that it could help the number of gun related deaths but there still is a chance of those type of deaths just maybe less of a chance.

  • I believe taking guns away from criminals with new laws will help lower the rate of gun-related deaths. I think that with more background checks that criminals and gangsters won't be allowed to purchase a gun. Which could help lower the amount of gun-related deaths. Hopefully one day the amount of gun-related deaths will drop.

  • I believe that increasing gun laws and making it harder for bad people to get guns is a good idea. I think that more background checks along with training are laws that could be implemented to help lower the crime rate. However, it seems as if many criminals will get guns illegally anyways but these new laws could possibly help stop some criminals from arming themselves.

  • I think that increasing background checks would be beneficial, but completely abolishing guns is pointless in my opinion because criminals will find a different way to get firearms. I think it could potentially lower gun related deaths but as I stated previously, people will just find a different way to get firearms.
