Should the drinking age be lowered?

The drinking age is 18 in 65% of the world. The lowest drinking age in the world is 15, but some countries don’t even have a limit. There are many pros and cons to lowering the drinking age. In the U.S there are some state-by-state expectations like consumption at home, under adult supervision, and medical necessity. In the United States, the legal majority for almost everything else is 18. For example, the voting age, enrolling in the military, and you can get married or signing almost any legal document without a parents consent when you turn 18.

By the time 60% of people are 18 they would have had at least one alcoholic drink. That shows that most people already drink alcohol. I think that part of so many underage people drinking is the thrill of breaking the law. If we lowered the drinking age then it could solve many more problems. People tend to use fake I.Ds and can get in more trouble because they are doing more illegal stuff.

I think the drinking age should be lowered. I think it will help stop someone from drinking and driving accidents, I say this because if you are allowed to drink then you can stay wherever you are drinking whereas if you are underage then you would have to drive home or leave before anything happens. If you are allowed to get drafted into the military, you should be able to decide what you put in your body. One of the biggest reasons was that kids would show up to school drunk, I think that if a student comes to school with alcohol in them then they could get a public intoxication and should be sent home.

Do you think that the drinking age should be lowered?

If so what age do you think it should be lowered to?

Why do you think the drinking age should be lowered/stay the same?

  • I agree that the age should be lowered. If you are able to become a working adult and are able to buy a house or a car at 18, it just makes sense that you should be able to consume and buy alcohol. At the age of 18 many people feel free from their parents and find some way to drink anyways. Maybe by lowering the age limit then they could build a tolerance and get over their "party stage" and move on with their lives.

    • I agree, if you can buy a house and car you should be responsible enough.

  • I think the drinking age should be around 19-20. When you are 18 your able to go to war and be identified as an adult. So if you arble to do all of that you should be trusted to be able to drink. Although, some people might take advantage of this.

    • I agree, some people could take advantage.

  • I don't think the legal drinking age should be lowered. Teens drinking = bad situations. Drinking at 18 could result in addiction to alcohol or worse, death from alcohol poisoning. New teens don't need alcohol before their life really starts. Alcohol could seriously affect the kids academically and mentally.

    • I get what you're saying. But 21-year-olds can also get addicted very easily. Also, their life technically is starting if they can vote or get enrolled in the military.

  • I think the drinking age should be lowerd to 18. I think it should be lowerd because 18 year olds are consitered adults and would not terribly misuse it. I don't think it should be lowerd to 16 becuase I think they would mis use it unlike adults.

    • I agree, you are considered adults.

  • I do not think that the legal drinking age should be lowered. Kids who want to drink will still drink. Peoples brains are still developing under 21. I personally belive that the current drinking age is just fine. Many more irresponsible accidents will happen if more people under 21 start drinking.

    • If the drinking age was lowered people could drink more responsibly.
