Should Smoking Cigarettes Be Banned?

Cigarettes are a thin cylinder of cut tobacco rolled in paper for smoking. They can lead to many different consequences that could eventually lead to troubles. There are many reasons why cigarettes are dangerous, but the main one is that it can lead to lung cancer. Cigarettes can also lead to other diseases, for example, heart diseases, and diabetes.

People think that cigarettes should be banned due to the harm they cause. If they smoke in public it could end up harming people around them. Smoking is one of the leading causes of preventable deaths around the world. It is linked to a lot of diseases, lung cancer being among them. Approximately 127,070 lives are lost annually in just the U.S. due to lung cancer. Heart diseases are also another consequence that could end up happening if you smoke. About 695,000 people die of heart disease in the U.S. annually. Another major illness that people can get due to smoking is diabetes. Around 1.5 million people die from this illness per year. Thus, so many people get diagnosed of different illnesses that can be linked to smoking.

There are also other people who think that smoking should not be banned. They think it shouldn't be banned because they should be able to have the freedom to choose wether they want to smoke or not. They believe that since it is their body they should be able to do what they want with it, even if it means harming it. If smoking did get banned it would not just affect the people that are addicted to smoking, but it would also affect the tobacco industry. The tobacco industry is one of the big contributors to our economy. If it got banned many people would lose their jobs and would be jobless.

I think that there should definitely be some restrictions when it comes to promoting cigarettes. I also think that people should not be allowed to smoke in public places where children could be around. Smoking around children for a long time could end up harming them.

Questions:

Should smoking be banned?

Should there be certain restrictions?

  • Great topic and great job Dixi!

  • I definetly think smoking and vaping should be banned. Smoking could lead to tons of health and mental health risks. Though it may feel good in the moment, that feeling is temporary and addicting. Although, I doubt a ban on smoking would come soon considering everything else happening around us the government has to worry about.

  • I think that cigarettes should be banned. If smoking only affected the people who did it, then I would probably be okay with it. Still though, many are affected by secondary smoke which can be even more dangerous than first hand smoke. When smoking is done in large enough quantities, it can lower the air quality of large areas.

  • I do not think that smoking should be banned because if they make it illegal people would always find a way to use them illegally. I think putting restrictions on smoking wouldn't be a bad idea because then it can help people with additctions.

  • Smoking should be banned, smoking can only harm you and your body, it also smells bad. If you smoke and walk by someone, you could potentially be putting them in danger. There doesn't need to be restrictions because it should be banned.

    • I agree. All smoking does is harm peoples bodies and it isn't only the bodies of the people that smoke, it is also the bodies of people around them.

  • i think that cigarretes are bad but i am desagree because there is people who smoked for anxiety and stress but is not an excuse to say that is good people like has been smoking for years and if it gets banned that people that will get sick because their body is use to doit always and stoped just like that will kill millions of people.

    • Ok, but people that smoke for anxiety and stress shouldn't do it. There are pills that can be prescribed to you to help you with that. There is no need for smoke because it ends up harming people rather than "helping".

  • I think that cigarettes are a bad thing they only cause problems from cancer to not being able to talk without a device. I would also be okay with there being restrictions on buying/using cigarettes so we can stop all the health problems with cigarettes.

    • I agree, they can give people cancer and other diseases, so why should it still be legal or have barely any restrictions?
