Should kids drink energy drinks?

An energy drink is a beverage that typically contains large amounts of caffeine, added sugars, and other additives. These drinks are often used by students to provide an extra boost in energy. However, If you drink energy drinks it can have a harmful effect on your nervous system. For teens, 12 to 18, it recommends that they should not exceed 100 milligrams of caffeine a day, according to the CDC. Plus most energy drinks contain 100–300 milligrams of caffeine per serving, although amounts can vary. So drinking and energy drinks  can be bad if they are over 100 mg.

History on energy drinks:  Energy drinks started during 1962 with Lipovitan D by a company named Taisho in Japan. Lipovitan D had extra caffeine and vitamins and was marketed as medicinal tonics. Later, in 1987, Red Bull energy drink was invented. After that many other places began to produce energy drinks.

10,000 to 20,000 kids aged 12 to 17 years went to the emergency room for an energy drink related emergency.

Some of the dangers of energy drinks include:

  • Dehydration
  • Heart complications
  • Anxiety
  • Insomnia

I do drink energy drinks and I personally think they are ok for you but if you overdose it can become very harmful and you can possibly die from overdosing.  But I do watch how much caffeine I ingest for the day.

    • I didn't read that parents should be in control of what energy drinks the kids should be drinking. If they don't monitor how much milligrams of caffeine they are drinking, it could lead to problems.

  • I think teenagers should be the youngest age to drink energy drinks but I do not think there should be an age restriction on energy drinks. I think that energy drinks are drinks with a bigger amount of caffeine and added sugars. I think that energy drinks can be useful in some situations.

    • I agree that energy drinks are drinks that have high amount of caffeine and high amount of sugar.

  • I think energy drinks are any drinks with large amounts of sugar and caffeine. I personally don't think children should drink energy drinks. Although in the end there can be no rule or age restriction put on energy drink. Instead parents should be responsible for when their kids should start having energy drinks.

  • I don't think kids should be able to drink energy drinks. They have enough energy to get them through the day if they're that young. However, once they get to the age where they're really busy, I think it would then be appropriate for them to have energy drinks.

  • I think any drink with a really high amount of calories and sugar is an energy drink. I do not think kids under 10 should be drinking energy drinks because it is hard on their hearts. I think there should be an age restriction on energy drinks.

  • I consider any drink with high amounts of sugar to be energy drinks, such as pop/soda. I think there should be an age restriction on energy drinks, especially for kids. I do not think kids should drink energy drinks because it can lead to many health problems like dehydration and heart issues.

    • I disagree. I don't think  pop is considered energy drinks because it only has around 30 mg where most energy drinks are above 50 mg.

  • I don't think that there should be restriction on energy drinks simply because some people actually don't sleep enough and are tired and drink it in order to help them stay awake for school, work, etc. I feel like young people shouldn't be drinking it on the regular because it can get addicting and unhealthy.
