Should college be a priority?

College graduates earn 80% more than non-college graduates. However, only 51% of people in America see college as important. In 2009, the Obama administration wanted to increase the amount of 25-34 year olds with college degrees or certificates to 60% by 2020. At the rate we are going, it would take until 2056 to reach this goal. The United States’ economy is dependent on the educational success of Americans. Without sufficient workers to complete the work needed to keep America running, we would ultimately fall to poverty.

One reason college has been pushed off for students is because of cost, which has increased by 25% just over this decade. The increased costs has put student debt in America at its peak. This alone is causing the importance of college in kids’ minds to drop significantly. However, having a college education increases the pay you make by a ton compared to someone who doesn’t graduate from college. So while you may spend a few years paying off student loans, you will be making more money in the long run.

Another reason students’ have seemed to lose interest in college is because of millionaires like Mark Zuckerberg or Bill Gates who are both college dropouts. These few exceptions cause kids to believe that they can make it just fine without a college education. While yes, it is true that you can make a good living without a college degree, you would be able to live more comfortably with one.

Without college education, our country will lack skilled workers and our economy will be hurt. While we can live without a college degree, it is important to our society. College isn’t a necessity for individuals, but our economy will continue to grow and flourish with college degrees.

  • I feel like college is a good thing as it opens up sevral job oppurtunitys and backup jobs if you need but ultimatley it is your choise. I am going to college personally to persue my visions of musically exeding in the future more through gigging teaching and much more, but education is needed first,

  • I think that it is the person decision to go to college or not, but I personally feel like college is a good thing and that like you said would be able to help you live more comfortably. I am going to go to college becasue I feel that it is a good way to have more job opportunities even though you can still live fine without college.

  • I feel like people should definitely consider college as an option, but understand that there is more if that's not what they like. For the average citizen it should be a priority because you want an educated population for prosperous country and America at the moment is one. I definitely plan on attending to college because all of my family has done so and I have seen that is has helped them a lot in life.

  • im not sure if i will be attending collage o trade school yet i havent decided. i feel collage is long ang hard with good opertunities but so is trade school and it costs less. this is why i think im going to attend a trade scholl instead of collage.

  • I feel like collage should be like masks in most places, requested but not required. if they did make it manditory i feel alto of people may drop out earlyier. this means less people would graduate leading to a lower IQ in all populations.

    • I agree, I think that college shouldn't be forced onto kids as much as it is because there are so many more ways to make a living. Plus college puts a lot of people into debt. My grandparents are almost 70 and they are still paying off their college debt.

    • I agree, I think that it is something that is forced too much on kids in highschool. Like you can do other things besides going to college and you can still get a good job without it. I think that online courses and the things you suggested are something that should be offered to kids more.

  • Personally I think that a lot of people should go to college but there are a lot of good paying options that don't require college, especially trades. I plan on attending college because I want to major in music and that requiers college.

  • I personally plan on attending a trade school to study mechanics. i believe that in the long run being a mechanic will help me save money and also create alot of money if that doesnt work out for me im gonna go to a college to be a welder and study underwater welding.

    • I agree with you that trade school will save you a lot of money. Plus a lot of times trades make a lot more money than like teaching. Internships also can get you paid while you are getting trained and then you work for the person a little while longer.
