Shark Attack Injures 10 Year Old Boy

A 10 year old child was bitten in the right leg by a shark in Hawaii. The boy was roughly 50-60 yards in the water when people started hearing him yell that he had been bitten. The shark attack happened just off of Makaha Beach which is located along Oahu's western shore. Witnesses say that the child was body boarding just before getting bit. Lifeguards rescued the victim and brought him to shore where they stabilized wounds and the gash in his leg. Shark warning signs were out out along area beaches just after the incident. This shark attack is the seventh reported shark attack in Hawaii this year and the third in Oahu this month.

Opinion- In my opinion I would be so scared to ever swim near this place, especially after having three shark attacks in Oahu this month. This may be a stopping factor in whether people vacation there or not.

Questions:

1. Would you be brave enough to go out and save the boy knowing that bleeding attracts sharks?

2. If you were the boy, what would be the first thing you would do after getting bit?

3. Would you vacation here knowing how many shark attacks have happened in just the past month? Why or Why not?

  • Excellent job Haley!

  • Personally I think that we shouldn't blame the sharks completely because that is their home that we invaded they were there first. It isn't their fault that when they feel threatened that they attack.

  • I would try, try to swim away, ya just not go far out in the water.

  • I would try and save him, and especially if I was a lifeguard, since that is their job. If I were in this situation, I would try and get help as soon as possible. Knowing that there were shark warning signs, I would not swim on the beach.

    • Agreed. I doubt that a ton of people swim here because of the recent attacks and the warning signs, but you can't ever let that ruin a vacation.

  • I would try to go out and save him. If he didn't get out of the water he could've been bitten again. If I were bitten I would probably scream and cry until somebody came to my rescue. I might vacation somewhere like this, but I definitely wouldn't swim in the water

    • That is my thinking too. I feel like I would be too scared to go save the boy but then again if it were me out there I would definitely want the first person who saw me to come save me!

  • I don't know if I would be brave enough to save the boy,

If I was bitten by the shark I would try to get to shore ASAP

I think I would still vacation here because it is a beautiful place I would just be more cautious when going into the ocean.

    • I think I would definitely still vacation here, and just be very careful on where I choose to swim.

  • I would save him because saving another human life is worth saving form a shark whether you know you're going to get bitten or not. I would yell for someone to help and try to swim back to the shore because if I got attacked again the injuries could be worse. I would still go but try to stay away from the beaches where the shark attacks have happened.
