Sewage Spill Covers Popular Hawaii Beach

Hawaii's Waikiki Beach: White sand, bright blue waters and now sewage? The beautiful beaches have been contaminated with 500,000 gallons of sewage that escaped from the local manholes. Honolulu officials state that to ease the flooding from recent rainfall, people illegally opened the manholes, pushing the contaminated water into the storm drains. These storm drains lead to the ocean and eventually contaminated the water of Waikiki Beach. City officials are advising people to stay out of the water, since they are not sure of the bacteria the water could have in it. Most of the beaches are empty, but a few people have stayed and are still swimming in the water.

I don't think that people should be swimming in the contaminated water, especially since they could get a disease or serious infection. I would probably wait until it was clear to get back in the water.

Do you think its okay for people to be swimming in the water? explain your answer.

  • Good job once again!!

  • I would never go into the water to swim, no one knows what kinds of bacteria the water has in it and which infections and diseases you could get from it.

  • I would not want to swim in anything that I know was coming from the sewage system. There could be many germs and diseases that you could get from swimming in that water if you get in your mouth, ears, or if you have an open wound. The people who swim in that water are crazy and must not care too much about their health it seems like.

  • No I don't think that  it is not ok to be swimming in the contaminated water.  Like you said they could catch a disease or an infection, but if people want to put their own life at risk by doing it, let them.

  • I think they should move the sewage to a different little like place away from water cause there is a lot of people that like to swim in water or the beaches and everything and so i think they should just dig like maybe a big hole in the ground and put it there so its not contaminating the oceans. I don't think people should be swimming in it early cause its sewage and its nasty and i don't know who would swim with it anyway.

  • I agree with you, I don't think it's alright for people to be swimming in the bacteria filled water. Swimming in the water could lead to diseases, illnesses, and seriously hurt!

    • Also, If people have open sores or anything like that it can get infected very easily.

  • Do I think it's okay? Yes they can choose to do what they want, but it's at their own risk. Is it safe? No I don't think that the people should be swimming in the contaminated water as they don't know what infections or diseases lurk under the water and should be cautious.

  • I do not think it is okay for people to be able to swim in the water. It could cause many diseases, and we don't know if those illnesses could spread.

  • First of all, gross! I totally agree with you! If the water is contaminated, you don't know what kinds of bacteria and diseases it could contain. Someone could get extremely sick! Therefore, I do not think people should still be swimming in Waikki Beach. If a family did pay a lot of money to go on this vacation, however, I could understand them still wanting to be able to swim. There are many other options though! I'm sure there are plenty of other activities to participate in on their vacation. If your family paid a lot of money to go on that trip, would you still swim? Or would you find other activities to participate in? Personally, I would find other fun activities.
