Roe v Wade Overturned

Roe v Wade Overturned

On June 24, 2022, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade (the landmark piece of legislation that made having access to abortions a federal right in the U.S.) By making this decision, they allowed states to decide their abortion laws. Some states that have limited access or completely banned abortions include but aren’t limited to Alabama, Ohio, Idaho, Kentucky, Louisiana, and more. Many people across the nation are still mad about this.

The only alternative to abortion is child birth. Child birth has approximately a 14x higher probability of death than abortions. Clinics in states that haven’t banned or restricted abortions find themselves struggling with having enough staff to help people.

I personally think that the court made the wrong decision on this case. Now, this has been in question for many years being such a controversial topic. Many people say that “abortion is murder”. Whilst others believe they should have a say as to what happens to them/their fetus.

What are your thoughts on this?

Do you think they made the right or wrong decision and why?

  • Good topic choice and well done overall Phoebe! I do think your summary could be longer.

  • I think that letting the states decide was a smart decision. I don't think that abortion is right unless it is like rape, incest, or dangerous to the mother. I think that just having an abortion because you don't want a kid is murder. That person should have been smarter before hand, and they should have to face the consequences.

  • I think they made the right decision by leaving it up to the states. Because I think no matter how small the baby is it's still a human and alive. I think that abortion is just another way of murdering someone. Although I think it's ok if the person was raped.

  • I think that roe v wade shouldn't have been overturned not just because of abortions, but also because it is important for other kinds of rights. For example, Roe v Wade expanded privacy laws, which I think most people don't realize. I also think that abortion is a human right and everyone should have access to it.

    • I like the fact that you brought up the privacy laws and women's rights. Essentially, they go together quite well. Having access to abortion doesn't just help expecting mothers, it goes to show that it also makes them feel safer. by having access, they know that there is a way out if they don't have a support system or if they are scared.

  • I see nothing wrong with abortion in any instance. Ultimately it should be the woman's right to choose if she wants to continue to carry and physically support a living being for 9 months. Being pregnant is a very hard thing, and it's an even harder decision to be a mother. In no way should a woman's right to choose be impeded on but the right to an abortion was overturned, unfortunately.

    • I agree. Having to carry a child for nine months and then the excruciating hours of labor added on to raising a child for 18 years is a terrifying thought. If the mother isn't ready, she shouldn't have to "deal with the consequences of having sex".

  • I am of the thought that abortion is murder and that is what my opion is and other can and will disagree with that. I think that making the states able to decide makes it difficult on the states. The states that decide for it now have all the people from the states that don't allow it coming to their clinics so will have struggles with that. As well as the issue of the states that decided against it now have lots of people who hate them. Same thing can be argued that no matter what you decide or think people are going to say that you are wrong.

  • I don't agree with abortion, and I think it is murder. Abortion is killing a little child and in many cases it is simply because you made the wrong choices. There are many people who would love a baby that can't have one and would take a baby in a heartbeat, and there are many different options.

    • I disagree. By "killing a little child", many potential parents see this as a relief. Maybe they weren't ready for a baby. Many people are saying things like, "they should have to deal with the consequences of having sex". These people are saying that they are killing a child and then calling said child a "consequence". While there are other options, the foster care system and adoption system is absolutely brutal. Many kids who have to go through it end up with severe physical and/or mental trauma.
