Public School Lunch Costs.

In 1946, president Hary Truman signed a law establishing nationwide public school lunches. Public schools have provided free lunches for all students for the past two years. Ever since the pandemic, free school lunches have ended for most schools. Many people argued that you should not be educating children on how they are able to just get free handouts from the government, referring to free meals. As of right now, California, Colorado, and Maine have made a continuing policy to have free public school lunches.

Why should schools provide free lunches? Having lunch during school is essential, all schools have to provide meals for students. Different studies show that when students get free and reduced lunches they aren't worrying about where their food is coming from. It has also been proven that free or reduced lunches decrease obesity rates and increase the good health of students. Many low-income families can not afford the cost of school lunches all year round. So free and reduced lunches help lessen the burden for not only these families but also all families.

Negatives effect of free and reduced lunch. One example of a negative effect is that schools that have a high volume of students who take advantage of free lunch are not given as much funding as schools that have fewer kids who use the free and reduced lunch plan. Another negative consequence of free lunch is some parents may feel that they have to use this "plan" even if the lunch their children are served at school is less nutritional and less filling than a lunch brought from home.

In my opinion, I think that school lunches should be free. Personally, it makes the most sense. I guess it really does not affect us students as much, mainly affects our parents or who pays for the lunch. I feel having free school lunch is one less things for families to worry about, especially lower class.

-  Do you think all schools should have free lunches? Why or why not?

- Should they at least lower the costs of the lunches right now?

- What people are the non-free lunches going to affect the most?

  • I think all schools should provide free lunch for every student. I don't think it is fair that some students get free lunches while others don't. I think they should lower the cost of lunch prices. i thnink they should make every lunch 25 cents for each meal. It adds up with time and it will be plenty of money for the school.

  • Schools having free lunches sounds great, but the problem is that most public schools can't afford them. Free lunch just means that students don't have to pay. Schools would still spend the same amount of money, but without getting any back. Having cheaper lunches is a lot better than completely free.

    • Yes, it does sound great. I think there are a lot of pros and cons to each side.

  • I think schools should at least lower the cost of lunches. The lunches aren't even worth $4/5. If the school lunches were healthier and tasted better maybe that price would be reasonable, but our school lunches are most definitely not worth that much. A lot of students also can't afford that price for lunch, yes there are groups you can qualify for to help pay for your lunch, but a lot of people who can't afford them also can't qualify.

    • I agree, they are definitely not worth that $4/5 everyday.

  • I do not understand the arguement of not having free lunches so that kids don't learn to just take handouts from the government. I do not understand this because many students didn't even know that the lunches were free so they didn't know that it was a government handout. The non-free lunches will affect the lower class mostly.

  • I think that all schools should have free lunches because kids are required to go to school, so it would just make sense for lunches to be free. If they really need the money, they should lower the cost at least, and because we do pay for them now, they should make the lunches better.

    • I agree with everything you are saying!

  • Of course, this comes back to the problem of the schools needing to make money off of lunches. It would benefit a lot of families to lower the price or to not have to pay for lunches. I don't think they are going to ever lower the price. When it comes to things like this, they don't lower the price, they just keep it the same.

    • With the prices of everything increasing, lowering the prices of lunch is porbobly not going to be an option anytime soon.
