Pros & Cons Of Teachers Carrying Guns In School

Do you think teachers should be able to carry guns in school? Over the years the number of school shootings has majorly increased. The only thing that’s been able to protect schools is the police, and they cannot always get there in time. In America, 33 states allow teachers to carry guns. But, most people are not comfortable with schools carrying guns.

First off, if teachers were given guns in school, it would give them a chance to fight back. It could reduce the amount of deaths and injuries caused by school shootings. Rather than having to wait for the police, the teachers could react immediately and protect themselves, along with the students. Once other people find out schools carry guns, it could limit the amount of shootings, knowing that there are armed teachers in the building.

Giving guns to teachers puts them and the students in possible danger. That includes the teachers shooting themselves or the kids in the classroom. This could be done by accident, or even on purpose, depending on the situation. Even after all the training needed to allow teachers to carry guns, research shows that teachers would not achieve the same accuracy with every shot and would likely hit something or someone other than the target/shooter. Students could also gain access to the guns of the teachers who didn’t hide them well enough or mishandled them.

I can see both sides of this topic. Carrying guns can be dangerous but can be used in the right situation, depending on the circumstance.

Do you think teachers should be allowed to carry guns?

Would you feel safe if you knew your teacher carried a gun?

  • Good topic choice and well done overall Addi! Be sure to comment back three different days.

  • I think there are two different sides to this argument. Yes it could make it possibly more safe if an intruder were break into the school. But it could also make it more dangerous at the same time because kids could access it and use it on other students.

  • I'm caught inbetween these two options. Yes, having guns in school can make it safer, but guns are dangerous and kids could get easier access to them. Maybe if they were in a special hidden area that can only be accessed dure dire situations. You also have to think that the teachers could freeze with fear or something so, I don't really know what'd be best.

  • I would feel safe and unsafe with teachers carrying guns in school. I would feel safe and unsafe with teachers carrying guns in school, I would feel safe because teachers could protect us, but I would feel unsafe because a teacher could lose it and do something terrible.

  • I think it could be a very good idea beause then we would actually stand a chance against the shooter. To me there's only one thing that could make this pretty dangerous. Kids could take the gun in school. However I think we could find ways to keep the gun secure. I think they could have a mini safe to put the gun in. I think the students could be out of the way of the door so it would be pretty hard for a kid to get shot.

  • I think that teachers having guns in school is going to cause more problems than solutions. Enough shootings are carried out by groups of people that a bunch of students could easily overpower teachers in multiple classes and get to their guns easily, especially if the gun is in an easy to access place (which it would have to be in order to be effective in a shooting).

  • I can also see both sides of the argument I do believe that teachers should have guns because they would be able to defend the classroom. but to make sure they can have a gun they should also have a screening to see if they go crazy or not.

    • I agree, I think that both sides of this topic is understandable.

  • I personally think it would be okay for teachers to have guns on school grounds so long as they keep it stored somewhere safe until they need it, but they shouldn't lock the guns up in a locker, instead they should have it in their desk for quick access.

  • I believe a teacher's job is to teach facts and nothing else. There is already a shortage of teachers, if they now also need to be able to handle a gun, then fewer and fewer people will probably want to become a teacher.
