Posting a Corpse

Derek Medina, a Florida man, posted a photograph of his wife's corpse on Facebook was found guilty of second-degree murder on Wednesday. Medina was accused of shooting his wife, Jennifer Alonso, in August 2013. After killing her, he posted a picture of her body on his Facebook page. Prosecutors are expected to seek a life sentence at a hearing set for January 2016.

The image stayed online and was passed from screen to screen for at least five hours. Facebook removed the picture and disabled Medina's page and that of his deceased wife. Medina accused his wife of abusing him and asked his friends for their understanding for what he did to her because of it in his post's caption.

Medina drove to see his family and turned himself in. He gave the police his address, they drove to the scene, and found the body of Jennifer Alonso. The couple's young daughter was still alive and unharmed in the house.

Questions:

  1. What do you think of this man's actions?
  2. Would you ever do something like this?
  3. Do you think social media is changing society?
  4. Are you addicted to your social media? How so?

My Opinions:

I think this man's actions are horrible. I believe he could have solved his problem through communication with his wife, counseling, or a divorce. His actions were not necessary. He will most likely be put behind bars for his actions. I would never, in all of my life, be capable of something like this. I don't think I could ever end someone's life. I think social media has definitely changed society.  When I was young I spent hours and hours outside playing in rain or shine 24/7. Whenever my family and I go to restaurants we talk and carry on conversations, but people around us are lost in technology. Watching a young family sitting playing on technology is heartbreaking. Technology has changed so many lives in so many wondrous ways. I am able to talk to my friends across the state in a few short seconds. Technology can not only bring us together, it can tear us apart. I am, at times, addicted to social media. I'm always communicating with someone, whether it's Snapchat, Instagram, or texting, but there are times when I'm not allowed to use my phone, a.k.a. the dinner table or at night. Technology can improve life or it can destroy. it.

  • Excellent job!!

  • I think that social media is changing how certain people live. For some it is their life to make sure they are noticed on social media. I am not addicted I just check it when am bored.

    • How often are you bored? I often do the same, but use it a lot more than I should. What do you think this man's punishment should be?

  • I think it is sickening. Especially of posting a picture on Facebook. I would never in a million years do something like this. I think social media is changing the society because this guy was looking for attention. Usually men are stronger than women, so I don't think she abused him. I don't think I am addicted to social media because I am barely on my phone throughout the day.

    • It's heart-wrenching. To murder your wife is awful, but to post a picture to your friends and family and to her friends and family is absolutely AWFUL. This guy definitely got the attention he was seeking. I also find it hard to believe that she abused him, but it is possible. My phone is never on at school and if it is, I'm communicating with my mom.

  • What Medina did was horrible, and deserves life in prison, like any other murderer. I just don't understand why he would put this on social media. Social media is definitely changing society, in good and bad ways. I guess I would say I'm sometimes addicted to social media, but that is what we use to keep up with the rest of the world.

    • I honestly believe he does deserve life in prison, and he just might be sentenced to life in prison. To kill your wife and post it online is absolutely horrible. It blows my mind to think that Medina thought this was okay. He justified killing his wife in the picture's caption. How do you think social media is changing society? It is a way to connect with people on the other side of the earth.

  • I think that's terrible, especially with a child in the situation. I would never do something like this, If you're really that unhappy with someone just leave them. I think this world is way too obsessed with social media. I think I am on social media a little too often. But, I don't necessarily think I'm addicted.

    • The child has to deal with her dad's decision. That post can still be circulating Facebook and lives in people's memories. I think he should have sought a divorce, or at the very least a divorce. We are obsessed with social media.

  • well the mans actions where not good at all and needed to be helped by someone if you can kill your own wife. pretty sure i would never do something like this, social media is changing the world people can not act normal without their phone or electronics. i am addicted to my phone i do not know what i would do without it
