New Jersey Devils Controversy

The New Jersey Devils is a national hockey team and have been recently getting a lot of backlash regarding their name. They were originally the Colorado Rockies but in 1995 they switched to the New Jersey Devils. Since the switch, they have competed in and won multiple Stanley Cups. We have also had many very good players on their team including Wayne Gretzky One of the best hockey players of all time, Martin Brodeur statistically the best goalie of all time also nicknamed the devil's wallpaper, and by far the hardest hitting hockey player Scott Stevens.

Although the controversial name may sound bad it is not what you think it is. Back in the 1700s in The New Jersey pinewoods, there was old folklore. A woman was going through terrible childbirth and called upon the devil for help. Once the child was born it sprouted wings, horns, and dark fur covering his body. There are many more rumors about how this folklore started. Even Napoleon's brother said that he saw The New Jersey devil. Nobody knows for sure how the folklore actually started.

Ever since the name was decided upon a large number of people have wanted to switch it but it has never gone through. Personally, I do not want them to switch it because it is my favorite hockey team and I know the backstory. Many people just see the name and assume it's bad. New Jersey is also the second most Catholic state in the United States. This would explain why the devils are getting so much backlash.

Do you think they should change their name?

What are your thoughts on cancel culture?

  • Great topic choice and well done Tyrel! +5

  • Personally, I don't really care much about this team so it really doesn't bother me either way. For those who do like this team, I think that they are probably frustrated and don't think they should have to change their name just because cancel culture wants you to.

  • I honestly don't care because I am a college sport person more than I am into the bigger sports. I honestly don't know what my thoughts are on cancel culture because most people don't know about their culture.

  • I think cancel culture is just people trying to pick issues where there really are none. They shouldn't have to change their name because they have had it for a long time. I think that people shouldn't look in too hard and pick out possible flaws to a team's name.

  • No they should not change it. They have the name for a while and it shouldn't change just because people are think the meaning is different than what it is. People are just soft nowadays.

    • I totally agree I feel that people need to just leave it alone.

  • I don't think that they should change it. They have had the name for a long time and it shouldn't switch again because people are being dumb about the meaning of it. In my opinion, cancel culture is getting out of hand and people just need to lighten up.

    • I believe that people are being to tight up about things they don't needs to be and it shouldn't matter.

  • I dont think they should change there name becuase it has been there name for many years and it is a religous thing. People belive what they want and we cant do anything about it. Cancel culture has nothing to do with this

  • I don't think it's necessary for the Devils to change their name. 'Devil' isn't a bad word, it's a religious thing. I don't think there's any reason to force them to change their name because it's built on folklore from their area. This example of cancel culture is just unnecessary.
