Is The Bubonic Plague making a comeback?

Plague is infamous for killing millions of people in Europe during the Middle Ages. Also known as the black death, it killed more anywhere from 30 to 60 percent of Europe’s population in the 14th century. Today, modern medicines are effective in treating plague. Without treatment, the disease can cause serious illness or death. This week in Mongolia, 28 people are being held in quarantine, because of a hunter that caught the pneumonic plague, which is believed to have caused the Black Death pandemic, after eating a wild rabbit. Health officials in China are confident that the risk of a large outbreak is very slim, and that as long as everyone infected is treated correctly, everything should be fine. Plague epidemics have occurred in Africa, Asia, and South America but most human cases since the 1990s have occurred in Africa. The last urban plague epidemic in the United States occurred in Los Angeles from 1924 through 1925.

1.  Do you think that this plague will spread to the rest of the world? Why or why not?

I highly doubt that it will because like the doctors said, as long as everyone is treated correctly, everything should be fine. We also have modern medicines that are effective.

2. Why do you think the plague virus stays in countries like Africa, Asia, or South America?

I read on another website that plague tends to spread in rural/agriculture areas. Also, since it's crucial to treat plague early on, they don't really have the antibotics and supplies to treat plague with them in their countries.

  • Good job overall Megan! Your first question could be stronger.

  • I don't think this will spread to the rest of the world if it is able to be contained early. I think the reason this is more common in places like Africa, Asia and South America is because there is a lot more poverty, and people cannot afford medical treatment.

    • I also don't believe that it will spread if it is contained easily. I also agree that the reason that the plague is more common in Africa, Asia and South America because many cannot afford medical treatment, and there is alot of poverty in those countries.

  • If what the doctors say is right, then no I don’t think it will spread. People just have to stay healthy and get treated. I think it stays in those countries because a lot of them don’t get treated and don’t get the right medicine when they get sick.

    • I totally agree with you! If the doctors say that it won't spread to the rest of the world, it probably won't. I also believe that it stays in those countries because many cannot get treated and they don't have the correct medicine when they do get sick
