Is The NIL A Good Policy?

On June 30, 2021, the NCAA approved a NIL policy or name, image, and likeness. This new policy allowed college athletes to make money from brand deals, hosting camps, and other deals. When this was passed it was a very controversial thing because some people now think that there's no difference between college athletes and professionals since they are both being paid. Plus, other people think that it would make athletes lose their love for the sport and only care about the money instead. Some people who support the passing of NIL thinks it benefits the athletes who aren't on scholarship and can help them pay for their college since they don't have time for a job. Another reason is that it will provide more drive and motivation for the athletes to work harder and perform better in their sport. Since this is a new policy there isn't that much information on how it has impacted athletes and colleges. Although there was information released that only fourteen universities are receiving profits from this new policy. And some powerhouse colleges are acting like monopolies when recruiting incoming athletes because of this NIL deal. You might ask, how do they do that? Well in the recruiting process when athletes are on visits to universities. Recruiters talk about their athletes at the college making money and how much from their NIL deals. Some positives of this being passed are that more college athletes are staying in school longer than in the past. Also, there have been many donations to charities from these athletes making money from their NIL deals. There are many mixed reviews on how people feel about the passing of the NIL policy, but I personally support the idea of college athletes having the option to make money for many reasons.

Do you think college athletes should be paid?

Do you think more colleges in the future will profit from this?

  • I think this is a great topic choice! You have a lot of good information in your long paragraph and that is what I would like to see change. Use paragrpahs to better effect.

  • I believe that college athletes should be able to get paid for Name, Imagine, and likeness. I believe that many of collegiate athletes will be able to possible live off the NIL deals at the end of there career if they would use it wisely.

  • I think that NIL is good and that college athletes should be paid. They put a lot of time into their respective sport and their classes and they deserved to be paid. I believe that NIL will help a lot of poor college students and take a lot of stress off them.

  • I think NIL is a good thing for the most part and if kids can make money than they should be able to. However, most college athletes are on a scholarship and don't have to pay for everything. I think scholarships already take a huge load off of kids and they should be thankful for them but NIL is a great thing if they can manage it.

    • I agree with you, the passing of the NIL policy would take a load off of athletes who aren't on scholarships and worry about paying for school. I also agree that if they have the opportunity to make their own money, they should be able to.

  • I think colleges should pay their athletes just because they bring in the money. I also think that NIL is helping some athletes but not all. I think the NIL policy will help i think, but I think it will have mostly positive impacts. I also agree that the colleges that do NIL will be a bigger priority to athletes looking for colleges.

    • I totally agree with you, I think that the passing of this NIL policy was a very good desicion for many reasons. I also believe it will have a more positive than negative impacts among the players and the colleges too.

  • I think that college athletes should be paid and this NIL policy is just another step towards that goal. Being a student-athlete is very time consuming and it limits their time to work outside of school. If a student is willing to put in the effort and time into their sport, why shouldn't they be rewarded with something beneficial to them? However, I think that this policy will be another factor in athlete's decision making process. In the future, colleges that don't offer or allow this NIL policy to benefit their athletes will not be at the top of the list for many talented athletes.

    • I 100% agree with you being a student-athlete is a very time consuming thing and limits the time they have outside of school and sports. You also made a good point when you said it will alter an athlete's decision when deciding where to attend school.
