History of the KKK

The 19th-century Klan was originally organized as a social club by Confederate veterans in Pulaski, Tennessee, in 1866. They apparently derived the name from the Greek word kyklos, from which comes the English “circle”; “Klan” was added for the sake of alliteration and Ku Klux Klan emerged. The organization quickly became a vehicle for Southern white underground resistance to Radical Reconstruction. Klan members sought the restoration of white supremacy through intimidation and violence aimed at the newly enfranchised Black freedmen. A similar organization, the Knights of the White Camelia, began in Louisiana in 1867.

In the summer of 1867, the Klan was structured into the “Invisible Empire of the South” at a convention in Nashville, Tennessee, attended by delegates from former Confederate states. The group was presided over by a grand wizard (Confederate cavalry general Nathan Bedford Forrest is believed to have been the first grand wizard) and a descending hierarchy of grand dragons, grand titans, and grand cyclopses. Dressed in robes and sheets designed to frighten superstitious Blacks and to prevent identification by the occupying federal troops, Klansmen whipped and killed freedmen and their white supporters in nighttime raids.

The 19th-century Klan reached its peak between 1868 and 1870. A potent force, it was largely responsible for the restoration of white rule in North Carolina, Tennessee, and Georgia. But Forrest ordered it disbanded in 1869, largely as a result of the group’s excessive violence. Local branches remained active for a time, however, prompting Congress to pass the Force Act in 1870 and the Ku Klux Klan Act in 1871.

Is the KKK still a big U.S. issue?

Why does the KKK still exist?

  • Be sure to include your sources as well as your personal thoughts. Your last two questions arent the best and the last question you should have talked about within your summary. The bigger issue is you didn't reply to any student comments which is worth 30 points.

  • I do not think that the KKK is a big problem in the United States anymore. The KKK is still around today because the older members most likely passed it threw their generations. I think they wore white hoods because it was their unique way that made them stand out.

  • I believe that the KKK is not a big issue in the United States anymore. The KKK still exists because it was learned by young people who have now grown older and passed it down through generations. I bellieve they wore white hoods to not be seen as much and it was kind of like a unique feature that made them stand out.

  • No I do not think the KKK is a big problem anymore. The KKK still exists because elderly people that where in it a long time ago passed it down to there kids or grandkids and people are all have there own beliefs.they wore the white hoods so people didn't know who they were.

  • I don't think the KKK is still an issue, because I've never heard anything more about it. The KKK existed because some people wanted to violently hurt the black people. The KKK wore white hoods because they didn't wanted anyone to know who they were, and they wanted to scare people.

  • No i dont beleive that the KKK is still a big issue in the U.S. They only exist because of the fact that they hated people of different colors and this was back in a while so people have adapted to living with blacks so KKK doesn't exist no more. They wore white hoodies to hide their identity and show that white was the most important color.

  • No, I don't think it is still a big issue. I think that it is still around becasue no one knows how to stop them and might not know who they are. Because they want them to think that it is better and to find themselves

  • No the KKK is not. Cause they dont like the blakcs. To show white supremicy, and to hide identities.

  • I haven't really heard of the KKK being around much anymore. I think that it used to be a big issue but overall forms of racism are still a problem today. I think that the KKK should still be learned about in school so people can know what it was. The reason they wore hoods was because they didn't want to be seen as easy.

  • I don't think the KKK is a big issue anymore i believe that they were forced to stop their unethical tactics. I think that it still exists but broken into different branches, But I think it exists because people are so racist towards colored people. I think they wear hoods to hide their identity but also so they can be identified almost like a trademark.
