History of Immigration in the United States

America is a country that has had a lot of immigration ever since North America was founded. The United States was built on immigration starting in 1492 when Europeans started to colonize. Immigration has not always been good because when Europeans first came they killed many native people and took their land. There have been many immigrants since the United States has become its own country.

The Great Atlantic Migration was one of the biggest immigrants to the United States. A small wave came in the 1840s while the bigger wave didn't come until the 1880. From 1880 to 1910 17 million Europeans migrated to the United States. Most of the people came from Germany and Ireland. Many farmers from Germany came to Illinois, Wisconsin, and Missouri. There was a failure of potato crop in Ireland which caused about 1 million deaths which pushed them to immigrate to the United States.

After The civil war some states started to put their own restrictions on immigration. In 1875 the Supreme Court declared that the regulations are to only be made by the federal government. There was an act put in place in 1917 that required a literacy test for immigrants over the age of 16. Immigration was cut during WWI however after the war nearly 1 million people migrated to the United States from Europe.

More recently most immigration comes from Mexico however there are people who migrate to America from all over the World. More recently people have argued about whether or not we should have different migration laws or if our border should be more protected. Most republicans want more protected borders and more immigration laws. On the other hand most democrats believe we have enough protection and the immigration law should not be changed.

Do you think immigration has been good for the U.S.?

Do you think our immigration laws are good?

  • I like your topic choice and you did a good job overall Cody. I would like to see some of your thoughts and opinions in your summary. Also be sure to comment back three duifferent days. It was also posted on day late.

  • I believe that most aspects of immigration are good for they country. I do that that we should have clear laws and laws that make us look at immigrants history before they cross into our country.

  • I think that immigration has its benefits and its flaws, for the most part it is a great way for peopl to start their life over depending on their past circumstances. Immigration is a great way to help boost the economy by getting the new immigrants into jobs to help get themselves on the right path.

  • I believe that the legal immagration has a good part in the United States. With them come over into the United States they are helping in the work force. Trying to better themselves in that way. I do not know much of the immigration laws in the United States. But I believe they are good to have and are helping a lot with illegal immigration.

  • I think Legal immigration is a good thing because it brings more people into the country, and helps improve the country.  I think we should try to stop the illegal immigrants coming to our country and give them a chance to become legal. I don't know much about the laws. I don't know much about the laws but just keep the illegals form coming in.

    • I agree that leagal imigration is good because it has helped shape the United states and I also agree that we should keep illegal imigrants out the best we can.

  • I believe that immigration has its pros and cons, many immigrants come to obtain a better life, moving away from their loved ones and perhaps without the possibility of being reunited with them, it is known that the aforementioned are very hardworking, they mainly do the hardest jobs in the hope that they do well. but also, there are those who do not like hard work and dedicate themselves to crime, and maybe that is what scares people, but that does not mean that everyone has those same ideas, the majority come to do honest work .

  • Yes, I think immigration has been good. There are lots of jobs filled by immagrants that would have otherwise been unfilled. Also, immagrants coming to the US has taught the American people and the immagrants to adapt and accept new cultures. I think our immigration laws are good, however I think there should be better rules for people coming in illegally.

  • I think immigration is good for the U.S. because it benefits everyone, both in having a larger population, also in having new ideas and having more input in the jobs, because there are still U.S. citizens who make immigrants do the heaviest and hardest work when it should not be thus, everyone should be treated equally, at the end of the day we are all humans and we have rights even if we are from different countries. I think the laws may be good so that things don't get out of control with immigrants, but obviously I feel bad for immigrants, because each of them come for a better education or a better job.

This topic is very controversial because everyone has their own way of thinking about legal or illegal inmigrants and immigration itsel.

    • I agree that imigration has been good because people from different areas bring new ideas and help build the country through working.
