The whole country knows what happened during the Monday Night Football game against the Buffalo Bills and the Cincinnati Bengals. The 24-year-old Damar Hamlin collapsed due to a cardiac arrest. This cardiac arrest could have been an instance of commotio cordis which is a blunt force impact disrupts the heart’s rhythm. This type of cardiac arrest is very rare.

In the 21st century 11-player tackle football was trending in high school, until the 2009-2010 academic year. The newest survey from the NFHS shows that in the 2021-22 academic school year there are less than 1 million people involved in 11-player high school football. That is the first time on record with fewer than a million players in 11-player football. This is a decrease of 12.2% from the peak in the years of 2008-2009. Football isn’t the only sport decreasing in size basketball is also decreasing. On the other hand, track and field and soccer are increasing. Soccer is increasing the most from the sports. In the 2018-19 school year there were 4.5 million boys involved in sports and there is 3.4 million girls involved in sports in that same school year. Now there are 200,000 less girls and boys as well, 400,000 people, in total, less in a 4 year span.

In my opinion, I don’t think that it is because of the injuries. I think its from the new technology. I think that the injuries also have some play in the decrease of people or students but not as much as technology. The new technology is starting to make people “lazier”. Instead of actually playing the sport you can play in online with friends instead.

Why do you think the number of students are decreasing?

Do you think that technology and online games play a part in the numbers?

    • I agree. There are a lot of student that have jobs to make money for college or just to have money in general. People also want to spend time having fun gaming too.

  • Yes I think that the number of people going into sports are decreasing. I think that a lot of people are going to do their jobs or gaming after school. I think that all of the good people in sports are leaving and that makes people not go back into them.

    • I agree. People don't have enough time to do sports, do school work, and go to work. People also want to have fun beside those and also they want to relax.

  • I think kids are becoming more scared of injureies or even parents might be scared that something can happend to their kids physcially and they might even be scared they might get mentally hurt, meaning grades going down, and not being able to focus in school.

    • I think that students' parents are more scared about injuries than the students. Especially with the kind of boys we have in our school for instance.

  • I think the number are decreasing in football because of the injurys. So many people get hurt and then kids think that it will happen to them if it already hasnt. I do believe that the online gaming does have a big impact because kids just go home and play vidoe games all day.

    • I agree. Students see that professionals get hurt and they think that if it happens to them it will to them but that's now always the case.

  • I think that people don't care about their grades they just wanna play sports. Some people know if they have bad grades they can't play sports. I think that if you are going to have bad grades then you should quit the sports or at least try to have good grades.

    • I agree. People are struggling with grades. COVID really messed a lot of that up because people missed over a full year of school and they are behind in general.

  • I think that a lot of people these days do not care about their grades at all. They know that if they don't have good grades, then they can't play. So, they know that there is abslolutely no point in going out for sports when they know they won't be allowed to play.
