Currently, there is an LGBTQ rights bill being talked about.  Marie Newman  is a huge supporter of this bill. She has a daughter who is transgender. She wants to support her by bettering the rights in the United States for the LGBTQ community. However, Marjorie Taylor Greene is not a huge supporter of this bill. She is calling the LGBTQ community, “disgusting, immoral, and evil.” These two women share the same workplace. Their offices sit across the hallway from each other.

Marie Newman decided to hang a pride flag in order to support the LGBTQ rights bill and her daughter. The flag was hung right outside her office door. Marie Newman tweeted, “Thought we’d put our Transgender flag so she can look at it every time she opens her door.” Marie Newman put the pride flag in order to represent her support of the LGBTQ community and her daughter.

Majorie Taylor Greene decided to mock and make fun of Marie Newman and her daughter. She put up a sign outside her office. This sign said, “there are TWO genders: MALE and FEMALE.Trust the science.” This was a disrespectful comment towards Marie Newman in order to mock her pride flag that was hung in the hall of the office. Majorie Taylor Greene also tweeted that, “Our neighbor, @RepMarieNewman, wants to pass the so-called “Equality” Act to destroy women’s rights and religious freedoms. Thought we’d put up ours so she can look at it every time she opens her door.” These two females have been tweeting different comments back and forth to each other throughout the making of this rights bill.

In my opinion, I think this should not be happening in a work environment. I think they need to act professional around each other, even if they do have different views about the LGBTQ community. I also think it was unnecessary for Marjorei Taylor Greene to be hanging a sign that is disrespectful and disgusting towards the LGBTQ community. I think she needs to respect the LGBTQ community.

Questions:

  1. Do you think Marjorie Taylor Greene is not acting professional by hanging a sign that shows disrespect towards the LGBTQ community and Marie Newman? Explain why or why not.
  2. Do you think any policies should be put in place in order to prevent situations like this one? Explain why or why not?

  • Good topic choice and just a great job overall Ryleigh!

  • I do think that Marjorie Taylor Green acted unprofessionally. The rebuttal with the sign was not the best way to react to Marie Newman putting a trans flag in front of her office. I do not think that any policies should be put in place to stop something like this from happening again.

  • I think it is very disrespectful of her to be calling the LGBTQ community “disgusting, immoral, and evil.” It is their lives I don't see why other people have to care so much about what they are doing with it.  For the two women, I personally think it is kinda kiddish that they are having this public fight. I think they can respect each others opinions or just agree to disagree.

  • I don't really think it's that disrespectful. People are allowed to have their own opinion on things. I agree with that sign that there are only 2 genders. I don't really think there's much they can do because it's her freedom of speech. She isn't doing a hate crime or anything shes just showing a poster that she beleives in.

  • I believe that in any work environment, there should be a certain level of respect for one's coworkers. In my opinion, it is okay to have a differing opinion than that of your aquantences but this is an unprofessional and petty way of stating one's beliefs; on both of their sides. Both of these women are intelligent and respected but the way that they are  publically humiliating eachother makes me question if these people should be looked up to or admired.

    • I agree with you. There should be a certain level of respect for one's coworkers. I also agree that it is okay to have differing opinions. I think they are acting unprofessional. Like you stated, they are intelligent and respected women in congress. They should act like these two women hold these roles in the government.

  • I think it was disrespectful for Marjorie Taylor Greene to put the sign up because Marie Newman was just trying to show her support for her daughter and the LGBT community. I do, although, support freedom of speech and think she has every right to put up the sign, even if it may be disrespectful.

    • I agree with you. I think it was disrespectful for Marjorie Taylor Greene to put that sign up, especially because it was put up to mock Marie Newman. Marie Newman was trying to support her daughter by putting the flag up. I also support freedom of speech, and I agree she has every right to put that sign up.

  • I don't believe Marjorie Taylor Greene was in the wrong for hanging up the sign. I believe that Marjorie Taylor Greene is expressing her opinion, which is her freedom of speech and expression. I agree with Taylor Greene's point of view and I believe she is indeed very professional. I don't believe that there should be any policies put into place to stop freedom of expression, that's just futile. Her sign doesn't hurt or attack anyone and simply expresses a scientific fact.

    • I understand that she was expressing her opinion. I know that she has every right in the United States of America to do that. I also understand that she does have freedom of speech and expression. In my opinion, I think she was acting unprofessional. She holds a major spot in congress. She needs to represent America.
