Does Trash Talk Have a Place in Sports?

Are you in sports? Do you watch or play sports? If so you’ve definitely experienced some sort of trash talking, whether it’s towards you, a teammate, or even someone on the opposing team. Maybe it’s just teams trying to have some fun, but how far is too far?

How long has trash talking been around? Trash talking has been around since the early 1970’s and continues to evolve every day in every sport. What is trash talking? According to the website, Britannica, “making insulting comments towards a team or player to intimidate them.” Trash talking is made to raise the suspense of games and increase the amount of people watching. Trashing talking originated from basketball, the actions that caused this boastful language were dunking and dribbling behind the back. Now, anything can cause someone to say something to intimidate a player. Trash talk is used in every sport, at any level.

Many think that trash talk should remain in any game/match to keep the event more entertaining to watch and to raise the stakes. The New York Times article states, “It puts more pressure on the performances of all involved, both the talker and the target, and demands to know whether they can handle that added stress and expectation”. Most athletes think that the comments made towards them are just something said in the heat of the moment, they don’t necessarily mean it in a harmful way. Some players don’t think they need to trash talk, they just need to be good at the game instead. An article on Quora about Tim Duncan states, “Timmy doesn’t care for trash talking or emotional mind games. He doesn’t engage in it. To him, it’s just a distraction that needs to be blocked out in favor of his goal: championships. Trash talk can easily tear down a person's self esteem or make them lose their love for the game.

With the details provided, trash talk is a main part in sports. Trash talk is made to get into someone's head during a big competition or even just a normal game. Some aren’t able to handle it and decide to quit playing because of it, whilst others do it in every game and plan to keep doing it until they retire. Trash talk is used in every sport, at any level.

    • I agree, trash talking can really diminish someone's self esteem.

  • With all of the trash taking that is going on I do think that the trash talking should be out of sports so whenever other people want to go and take some sports for fun and then no one will have to go and feel bad while people have to go trash talk no more

  • No, I also don't really do any sports I did do cheer, however there are not compitions  in cheer. I think that it should as long as it doesn't turn into violence, then i sould be ok. I think it can sometimes make the team even more mad and help the other team.

  • I will sometimes trash talk but I will do it to see their reaction and like to get into their head. Yeah, I think trashtalking should stay in sports and maybe that will motivate the guy that is being trashtalked to and that could help it get into his head. I don't think trash talking is useful.

  • I think trash talk is a very fun thing to do in sports, yes i do when it comes to sports, like if some got hit sticked in real life i would be like "sit down son", or "woah watch it princess". I just think that its a fun way to intimidate your opponet, and if it works it's useful.

  • I think that trash talking should stay in sports. I think that it is an useful tool on the feild to get into the other teams head. These things are small but can make a big impact when it comes to controlling the field. I do trash talk. But only when the other team is doing it.

  • I trash talk sometimes to try and get into other players heads and it works most of the time. I never try to bring it to far tho because that can start a fight. I think that trash talking should stay a part of sports because it makes it interesting.

  • I don't trash talk because it can affect people negatively when it goes too far, but I don't think it's the worst thing you can do. It should'nt be a major part of sports, but it will probably stay that way. I don't think trash talking is useful.

    • I agree, there are a lot of people who take things too far in the heat of the moment.

  • I will talk trash everyonce in a while as it gets in their head and can effect how they play, i do think trash talking should be allowed to a certain point as if its going after race or other things like that i think it should stop. i do think trash talk is useful sometimes.
