Daylight Saving Time: is it Necessary

Daylight saving time is the process of moving the time forward one hour on the second Sunday of March. Then, nearly eight months later, on the first Sunday of November, the time is set back an hour. This process has always been used to get more use out of natural sunlight each day, however, its history is quite complex. Summarily, Benjamin Franklin suggested this practice in 1784 to limit the usage of candles. Daylight saving time became more popular during World War I to save fuel, eventually spreading throughout the world.

There are many advantages to daylight saving time. One of the greatest advantages is the environmental benefit which has many contributing factors. Firstly, daylight saving time extends evening daylight, consequently, less electricity is used for light. Another benefit is a lower rate of car accidents due to sunlight during later hours of the day. Lastly, because of daylight saving time, people are more active in the evening which allows for more spending. Overall, setting clocks back and forward one hour helps our world in many ways which are often overlooked when viewed at face value.

Daylight saving time also has many disadvantages which should be considered. The first and most obvious is a lack of sleep as individuals adjust to new schedules. A difference of one hour can initially create difficulties falling asleep and waking up which is quite inconvenient. This inconvenience is also relevant for certain industries, especially those who work outdoors. To summarize, daylight saving creates disadvantages that are not extreme, yet they affect almost everyone.

Many contrasting factors make it difficult to decide whether we should have daylight saving time. I believe we should continue to implement this practice in our lives for numerous reasons. The first of which is the severity of the advantages. For example, daylight saving time prevents car accidents which saves lives. The final reason I support daylight saving time is the difficulty of removing a practice which has lasted for so long.

Do you think daylight saving time is necessary?

Should we continue to use daylight saving time?

    • I agree with you and also believe that having sunlight later in summer evenings is an important factor. I also agree that continuing to use a system which we have used for centuries is the simplest solution to this problem. Overall, my opinion is similar to yours.

  • I think that overall daylight savings time is necessary. I like it because I have a longer day and the sun is up longer. I think we should keep doing i tbecause we have been doing it for so long that it would feel weird not to do it.

  • I do think that daylights saving time is necessary mainly because we have been doing it for a long time. I do think we should continue to do it. Daylights saving time can cause it to get darker earlier which my dad who is a farmer doesn't like.

    • I agree with your opinion, and I also think it is best to continue to use the system we already have. Although many people believe modern technology is a reason to remove daylight saving time, I also believe we should keep it because of the effect on people such as farmers.

  • I think we should put it on one time and just leave it. Many people are starting to get tired of switicing the clocks back and foward an hour. I understand it helps with daylight certine times of the year but i think personally we should just leave it.

    • I understand the annoyance of changing the time, however, I do not think this is a good enough reason to remove daylight saving time. I believe this because the time only changes twice per year, and your life returns back to normal very fast.

  • I believe that daylight savings time is necessary. first if we didn't than some days would start darker than others and if kids who have to walk to school on cold nights earlier than it might be more dangerous for them. also they can be abducted alot easier if it's darker out.

  • I don't think it's necessary because it messes up my sleep schedule. I think we should stop it because nobody likes it and it's not necessary to have it. Having to change clocks and sleep schedules and people are not used to how fast it gets dark out.

    • Although I understand each reason that you have provided, I disagree with your opinion. This is because many of the evidence that supports the continuation of daylight saving time is more signicant than your reasons. For example, if daylight saving time is removed, more car accidents will occur.

  • I think daylight savings time is a good thing because you wake up when the sun comes up, having more time for the day.
