Century Old Message in a Bottle

Back in April 2015, Marriane Winkler, A resident of Amrum Island saw the glass gleaming in the distance. Following the directions of the postcard on the inside, she sent it to the Marine Biological Association in the United Kingdom. This bottle is one of 1,020 dropped in the ocean between 1904 and 1906 by a British scientist George Parker Bidder. Bidder originally dropped them to study currents on the ocean floor. Most of the bottles were recovered back around the time of the experiment, but there are still around 400 that have yet to be accounted for. According to the associataions communications officer, Guy Baker, it first came as a suprise until they saw the name of George Parker Bidder (A former president of the Association). The bottle is now up to see if it will break the Guiness world record for the oldest message in a bottle.

I think that it would amazing to find something like this, especially since this type of experimentation is no longer used. Scientists now tag fish as a modern "message in a bottle".

What would you do if you found something like this? Would you keep it or follow the directions given?

  • Well done!!

  • If I found this I would think it would be amazing! I'm really interested in looking back in history and just picturing holding a message in a bottle that was a hundred years old and had it's own unique history and story would be pretty remarkable to me. If I found something like this, I would follow the directions out of pure curiosity to see what would happen next and possibly find out more about the bottle.

  • I think it would be super cool! I would probably take some pictures of it and show it to a few people maybe. After that I would definitely would do what they asked! It would probably be good for scientists to have.

  • I would definitely follow the directions and send it back to the person that "sent" the message, because if I dropped a bottle with a message in it I would love to get it back sometime!

  • I think that it would be pretty amazing to find something like this. Just the fact that this bottle is that old would be pretty cool to find, but to have it be part of an experiment is even better. I would definitely follow the directions that it would give me because you never know what you might find.

  • I would follow the directions it would give. Although it's possible there could be no meaning to it, it would be great use for scientists.

  • Like most people, I would follow the directions. Though it has no purpose it could still be used for research, and more like the one that was just found will start showing up, since there around 400 that have yet to be accounted for.

  • I think I would keep the bottle.  Finding a message in a bottle is a rare thing and I would want keep it.

    • Yes it is! I almost wonder if it would be worth any money too?

  • If i found a bottle like this I would follow the directions, unless its just something bad. I would be really curious to see what it leads to, you would be really lucky to find one.
