Breaking Racial Barriers

In Wilcox County, Georgia students finally get to attend a integrated prom. This high school for decades had privately hosted "White Proms" and "Black Proms" separately, planned by parents and students. Finally the school leaders announced they would sponsor a prom for all races. Their superintendent said, "Everything went off without a hitch". More counties in the deep south had banned proms and school danced mixing Whites and Blacks. Schools in the South have began to take action to break those barriers down. A graduate from Wilcox made a statement saying, " If we're all together and we love each other the way we say we do, then there are no issues, this is something that should have happened a long time ago."

Story Here

Reading this really surprised me. I didn't think that there was so much racism and separation going on, especially in high schools. It should make us, and schools around us feel thankful to not have to deal with these types of problems.

How would you feel if your proms, homecomings, and dances all depended on your race? Why don't you think the school had dealt with this decades before?

  • Great topic and well done once again!

  • I think its good that they dealt with it and now all races can attend the same prom, but i think that they should have dealt with it earlier.

  • I think it is great that they were finally able to do this.  It is sad it took this long though.  It doesn't matter what race you are, you should all be able to enjoy the same things.

    • I think so too. The students probably so used to it though, that they didn't know any different.

  • I can't Imagine how hated you would feel if you were black in that situation. The fact that separation between races is still happening even though it was abolished hundreds of years ago is just sickening.

  • This really surprised me. I thought that we had moved past that! It's honestly kind of sad that that has been going on for so long.

  • That would be weird if you were just with whites or just with blacks probaly because the other people liked it that way

  • I think the world still needs to get over the racial thing. I believe both are equal and should really come together. It would be very different to have two proms for different races.

  • It was most likely just a tradition for the school. They probably didn't think anything of it. I would hate if our dances depended on race. I don't think our school could even do that.

    • I think it was. And I would too, that's crazy to even think about that actually being a rule or tradition.
