Bay of Pigs

The Bay of Pigs Invasion was a failed military landing operation on the southwestern coast of Cuba in 1961. The Americans barely supported the Bay of Pigs invasion and despite it's failure. They went to swampy area on the southern coast of Cuba on a night landing might bring a force ashore against little resistance and help to hide any U.S. involvement to help the Bay of Pigs to win the war. Unfortunately the landing site also left the invading force more than 80 miles from refuge in Cuba's Escambray Mountains, if anything went wrong.

The original invasion plan called for two air strikes against Cuban air bases. A 1,400 men invasion force would go under cover in the darkness underground and they will launch a surprise attack underground. The United Revolutionary Front will send leaders from South Florida to help and establish a provisional government for the Bay of Pigs. The CIA had used World War II B-26 bombers and painted them to look like Cuban air force planes. The bombers missed many of their targets and left most of Castro's air force connected.

As news broke of the attack photos of the repainted U.S. planes became public and revealed American support for the invasion. President Kennedy cancelled a second air strike. On April 17, the Cuban exile invasion force known as Brigade 2506  landed at some of the beaches along the Bay of Pigs and immediately came under fire. Cuban planes strafed the invaders sank two escort ships and destroyed half of the exile's air support.

My thoughts..  It's sad that the Bay of Pigs failed.  Many of the soldiers died because of th5tf;ois war. I am glad they were trying to win the war but it was hard for them. They did'nt do a great battle between Cuba.

  • Great topic choice and summary Samantha! It was posted a week late and you didn't reply to any student comments which is worth 30 points.

  • No, the bay of pigs was very unsuccesful which lead to the cuba missle crisis where we almost went to nucular war. If I was apart of this war then I would have fought for my country even if I thought it was wrong.

  • It's unfortunate that the Bay of Pigs had failed, just due to the fact of the loss of armies and people. But, I personally think the attacks were slightly unwarrented, considering the U.S. had missiles in Turkey, that we even had to remove at the end of Cuban Missile Crisis just to end it. I understand that we were butting heads constantly with the USSR, but we were being a bit hypocritical I think. I think taking both missiles out of both countries was the right call.

  • I think mainly the Bay of Pigs just failed because we weren't fully prepaired. I also don't think that this was not the best option/ form of fighting that could have taken place.

  • I think that the Bay of Pigs failed because they didn't fully comprehend how much power Castro had at that point. I don't know how I would feel about the war because there could have been nuclear warfare involved and that could have effected America greatly.

  • I think the bay of pigs failed because they couldn't deal with how much Castro had of armed forces. The war was started by the US and Cuba. I wouldn't know what to do if I was apart of this war. I don't think the bay of pigs was successful.

  • I think that the Bay of Pigs defiently failed because they were majorly unprepared for the situation to be big. The war was between the United States and Cuba. I would pry be a little bit worried about being in thus war because some wars can be really bad.

  • I personally think that the bay of pigs failed because Kennedy didn't bring the planes and that Castro knew that the U.S.A was planning to attack Cuba. Kennedy one hundred percent started this war but back then it was for a good reason. The Bay of Pigs was a fail for the U.S.A..

  • I think that they failed because they weren't prepared for the situation to be so major. It was a war between the United States and Cuba. I would feel scared about any kind of war, I think it would be terrifying to be involved in. I think that they were not successful.

  •  think the Bay of Pigs invasion failed because they were not really prepared. It was a war between the United States and Cuba.which lead to their downfall. If they would have been successful, I would be okay to be apart of it.  it couldve been good
