10-Year-Old Hospitalized After Termite Fumigation

Peyton McCaughey, a 10-year-old boy and his family became ill after returning to their house 2 days after Sunland Pest Control sprayed their house for termites. When the family arrived to the house, the immediately felt ill. Everyone was vomiting, but Peyton McCaughey's condition was much worse. The young boy could barely stand or speak. They went to a local clinic to find that he was poisoned by the fumigation. Everyone in the family recovered except for Peyton. He can barely speak and he has lost feeling in his left arm and leg. He also has a lot of brain damage.

The Florida Department of Agricultural and Consumer Services has issued a Stop Work Order prohibiting Sunland Pest Control to do any fumigation at this time.

I think this is a sad story. Also, that the Pest Control could have made sure it was safe before the family went to the house. Pest controls should take incidents like this seriously.

If you were part of The Florida Department of Agricultural and Consumer Services what would you do to the pest control business that did this? What are some better precautions that pest control businesses can take?

  • Good job overall but you only replied twice. Be sure to check back every night.

  • I would take away their privilege and shut their business down, until they department of agricultural and consumer services figures out what chemical they used to spray the house. The pest control could have looked closer at what chemical they were using so that they could have prevented this from happening to this family.

  • I think they should be punished and charged for what they have done. I think they need to go through the house and make sure it is completely safe for the family to go back into the house.

  • I would make sure it was done right and they know there information when or when they can't go into the house make sure they are ok to go into the house. I would make test everyone now that it happen text everyone and make sure they are not just some random people that decided to do someone else job and try to kill people.

  • The pest control service should have been much more careful and done more research on when the family would be able to enter the house. Many people would expect a qualified service to know when the it would be safe to re-enter a fumigated home. I would shut the company down if i was part of either of those organizations.

  • The pest control should be sued because the little boy could have and maybe still could die from brain damage. They should have let the family know and it wasn't ready yet.

  • Technically it was the pest control company's fault for not warning the homeowners that the fumes were still in the air. It only takes a little bit of common sense to call the family and warn them. The pest control company should be thankful they did not get sued. If anyone died of the family, the pest control company would have probably been charged with murder.

  • Something obviously went wrong in the process because the company business is to do the fumigation process and they have experience knowing that the chemicals should be cleared up after 2 days. It's almost as if the company returned to do the project at a later date, and forgot to notify the homeowners of the switched schedule. If I was a manager at the Florida Department of Agricultural and Consumer services I would start an investigation on the situation and make sure this same incident doesn't happen again.

  • I am glad they are looking into this, because it would be terrible if happened to a lot of people. They should make sure it works safely and if it doesn't they should stop using  it.

  • I think that the pest control business that did this should be restrained from any fumigation for quite a while. This would allow them to sort things out and make the process safe for everyone. They should probably lengthen the time period that the family is away from their house to be sure that the fumigation process is over.
